Kerry to Give Dems Leftover Campaign Cash
Kerry to Give Dems Leftover Campaign Cash

By RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer

WASHINGTON - Under friendly fire, Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) likely will donate a substantial portion of his excess presidential campaign cash to help elect Democratic candidates in 2005 and 2006, advisers said Thursday.

Party leaders, including some of Kerry's top campaign aides, said this week they were surprised and angry to learn that he had more than $15 million in accounts from the Democratic primaries. They demanded to know why the money wasn't spent to help Kerry defeat President Bush (news - web sites) or to aid congressional candidates.

There were no easy answers to those questions, officials close to Kerry acknowledged Thursday, but they sought to assure Democrats in a series of telephone calls that the four-term Massachusetts senator was sharing his political wealth.

They argued that he donated $40.5 million to Democratic causes in 2004, including $3 million each to the party's House and Senate campaign committees. More than $32 million went to the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites), including $9 million targeted to state parties.

2. And is this separate from the GELAC fund and monies for legal fees?
If Kerry does decide to institute legal proceedings based on evidence, if enough evidence presents itself, where will the funds come from?

If it weren't for bush, I would not only have better wages which were cut as a direct consequence of his policies, but I'd have more money in my pocket from not having to constantly contribute so much to attempt to enact some justice in this world. It's maddening.

6. The Funds Will Come From Angry Democrats Determined to Get the Truth
$7MM or whatever is plenty for the initial investigation and filing phase, if it gets to that.

12. The campaign had to stop accepting donations/contributions
after the convention, remember? I actually had a check returned because it was received after the deadline.

The GELAC is separate from the campaign funds and could not be used for the campaign and can only be used for the legal fees, battles, costs associated with the election. Don't stress, that money is still available and lawyers are being paid from the coffers.

9. No, Gore had millions left over in his campaign coffers too
and he donated it to either Kerry or the DNC. This is not unusal folks, stop whining, and stop blaming the victim of the crime for the crime. :argh:

13. I absolutely agree, hippiechick.
If Kerry were serious, his campaign would be hiring technical people to review the results and point to the places where recounts must be done. He has hired no technical people.

Recounts are underway in some New Hampshire counties at Nader's request. The Ohio recounts requested by Greens and Libertarians can't start for a few more days and need top level volunteers in 88 counties. Nader wants to expand recounts into Florida as soon as he gets good data on Diebold results in New Hampshire.

So far, no Democratic Party money or Kerry campaign money is being spent to help these efforts.

What does that say?

5. Why didn't Kerry/Edwards spend that
money in August/September/October?

In August to answer the swiftboatliars club and September/October to answer whatever the latest smear from bush/rove?

7. They couldn't spend it after the convention
Why they didn't donate it to other candidates I don't know. However, by the time the SBVT emerged it was after the convention and the campaign was constrained by public financing.

11. Thank you for your intelligent and reasonable post.
For all of the research done on DU, it has really bothered me that folks would rather trash Kerry than go back and look at the facts regarding the timing and the FEC requirements.

14. THanks for answering my question.
I'm not here to "trash" Kerry/Edwards..I really wanted to know.

I didn't understand that they had a nest egg they couldn't touch.

This makes me feel a lot better.
