Poll question: If Hagel or McCain is the GOP nominee, who do we put up against them?
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 07:59 PM by FrenchieCat
The advantage that Chuck Hagel and McCain have is that they are both charismatic enough, moderate Republicans who appeal to moderates from both parties and appear to have the image of being strong and tough and with many leadership qualities required in a time of war (War on Terra will still be going strong, if you ask me).

They also appear to be much more conservative with fiscal discipline than Bush has ever been. They are both pro-business but with a more "rein-in" attitude toward giant corporations.

Their disadvantage is that they are both Senators (with lotsa votes)with much legislative experience but little executive experience. They have both pissed off the Republican base many times, and it is possible that many Radical Fundies may stay at home for the vote unless these two move to the right of their current flank.

Remembering that this is the first election where neither an incumbent nor a VP is running since 1952, who would be the best Democrat candidate to put up in order to give us a fighting chance in countering, neutering and defeating either of these two?

1. we might be toast, but let's hope the Republicans are too reactionary
to nominate one of those guys. Hey, here's an idea: change your registration to Republican and vote for Alan Keyes!

3. Regardless of who the candidate is
We go 527 smear on them. Get some of the religious right to do our dirty work. Neither of these two will play enough to the fundie vote. Divide and conquer my friends

4. Good question Frenchie!
Clark

(Good answer Jim!) :)

Of course, I am having a hard time imagining a 2008 race where Clark wouldn't be strong for the Democrats.

5. I'm thinking Kerry
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 08:06 PM by zulchzulu
By then, the economy will be even further in the crapper, the war will have become even more unpopular with lots of casualties and impending doom, we will probably have been struck again like 9/11 and seniors will be pissed as hell from the repercussions of the Medicare debacle.

It's going to be a bloody year for the Repugs*, so no matter what aging McCain (who I know will not run in 2008) and Hagel (whose only plus is the link to Diebold) will have a lot of explaining to do with the Repugs having controlled the White House and had gotten bloodied in the 2006 House elections.

Kerry will have proven his mettle with the wars in the Senate. Frankly, Clark isn't going to run. Dean.... I dunno. Hillary...... Warner....hmmm...maybe. Kucinich and Feingold, as much as I'd take a bullet for either of them, won't be in the main picture.

Even though I'm leaning Kerry, I'm guessing (with a wee bit of hope) that the Repugs will be in for a major drubbing since they have no excuses for blaming anyone else but themselves in 2008. We could nominate Eminem and his secret daughter and we'd win.

* If we still have the same shit from BBVs then, the Repugs win even if we nominate Superman.

6. Clark has been on television numerous times....
since the election. He has yet to say he wasn't running.

Kerry showed himself to be undecisive and weak (no surrender was his theme song...Hel-lo....didn't see it).

I have heard too many comments made everywhere about how many voted for Kerry because he wasn't Bush. How they held their noses, etc..

Well Bush ain't running in 2008....so to me, it means that John Kerry becomes even less attractive...literally as well, cuz in 4 years, that face is going to age...and it ain't going to be "full of Grace".
