The Future is Bright in Oregon
Tom Potter is a 2004 Dean-Dozen candidate who was elected Mayor of Portland on November 2nd. Congratulations to Mayor-elect Potter on his successful campaign and an extremely promising future!

On Election Day, voters in Portland, Oregon—the city I love—joined with millions of Americans in standing up and demanding change and a more accountable government. Some national races didn't go our way, but when I talk to people in my city, I don't hear discouragement. I hear them saying the fight has only just begun.

When my mayoral campaign was declared the winner on election night, it was a stunning victory for grassroots politics. People were really the driving force of my campaign. After being outspent 7 to 1, we proved there are no odds that can't be beaten, no status quo that can't be overturned. I hope my election serves to remind progressives everywhere how much we can accomplish when we work together.

We'll face big challenges in the years ahead, but we have an amazing resource; millions of principled Americans who are committed to bringing about change. And we'll have Howard Dean continuing to lead the way.

I was honored to receive Democracy for America's endorsement as a Dean Dozen candidate for 2004. Thank you all for everything you do.
—Tom Potter

2. Who is the happy guy in the middle in this picture?
That sounds like it must have been a fun day in Portland, door to door.

And another from the neighborhood walk that day.

4. Potter won because he wasn't Fransesconi!
that he's a decent guy to boot and respected by the community helped- but the bottom line is that he didn't have much of a campaign and only won because most people (including yours truly) thought the other guy was a jerk.

5. That is a weird statement, and rather rude.
I don't know what to say about that. Falls under the category of not needing to be said.

Success From the West

Oregon, known around the country as a progressive, environmentally conscious haven, turned an even deeper shade of blue on Election Day. We had two Dean Dozen candidates and both of them handily won their races.

Portland's mayoral candidate, Tom Potter, followed the Dean mantra and capped his campaign contributions at $100 in the general election and a mere $25 in the primary. He defeated his big business rival, capturing over 60% of the vote!

Oregon's other Dean Dozen candidate, Peter Buckley, won his state legislative race by a stunning 60.38%. Peter worked diligently on Howard Dean's campaign for President by leading Meetups and hosting house parties.

We carried Oregon! "Carry Oregon" was even our official campaign name. And we lived up to it, with a huge amount of volunteer energy and initiative from Oregon's mighty, people-powered Howard Dean volunteers. Our team here lost no momentum after Kerry won the primary. Dean inspired us to stay in the fight! Oregon's excellent Rep. Earl Blumenauer graciously sought the support of Dean volunteers. Behold the power — in Oregon, Kerry won by a margin of victory ten times greater than Gore's margin in the 2000 election.

The best news is that Democracy for Oregon is already incorporated, has a state website and four regional sites and is fostering progressive action with Meetups across Oregon. More newcomers are joining every day.

Our Democracy for Oregon leaders are meeting to set our goals and agenda for the next several months. Besides keeping Oregon blue—maybe we'll plan to adopt Idaho to help them progress to a soothing blue as well?
