Help organize protests
I am told that there are dozens of web sites dedicated to organizing protests in various cities.

Let's not waste time and effort re-inventing the wheel. We need to get all protest info - whether DU or not - on one calendar to help maximize turnout.

Looking for ideas - I think we should add a permanent thread at the top of each State Forum called "Protest". Like Breaking News forum, all of the thread titles should have rules - just the the date and location of the protest being organized. And then of course un unlimited number of posts under that first originating thread.

I would also like to see a state by state calendar.

Any other ideas?

1. Definitely.
We need something like that. There are too many organizations and small protest groups out there. We need an umbrella bulletin board for all of them.

I really wish we would get some backbone like the Ukranians and take to the streets about Bu$h.

2. Fantastic idea!

The protest dates and times are all over the map.

Since we don't have any pull with the media, we must show up in large numbers, not just for TV but for others to see our bravery against this regime.

3. We need this!
There are dozens of groups organizing protests many of us would like to attend, but their reach is small, often limited to the people who opt-in to their news alerts.

A calendar for each state would get the word out quickly to thousands of DU members.

5. The advance of the neocons
People are organizing protests on several key issues. Specifically,
* The occupation of Iraq
* US imperialism in general
* Election fraud
* The corporation controlled media
* Bad economic policies
* Religious takeover of government, schools, and business

And we need to be organized to protest a draft (heaven forbid should it come to that).

We need a static place to post events so that people who want to attend have access to the particulars.

Adding a thread to the top of each state forum implies dissent is good. Takes us to a new level.

6. I think you need to re-examine a few things...
First of all, banners like "Corporations Control The Media" is like saying "CNN has Commercials every 10 minutes". Its not much of a rallying cry!

Second, when you are willing to "take to the streets" over every little tiny thing, you dillute the potency of "real" protests.

You define yourself as someone who is incapable of changing the future with 1) Money 2) Elected Office Power and look like you are only capable of changing the system by CRYING LOUDLY and being ANNOYING. Not a good strategy going forward... IMHO of course...

7. I agree. That's a dumb banner slogan
I "look like I am only capable of changing the system by CRYING LOUDLY and being ANNOYING?" You know nothing about me and making comments like that tell ME you are a very ignorant, self-absorbed person.

You might consider the Iraq war, stolen elections, our cheerleading media and our economic situation tiny little things, but tens of millions of us do not.

I guess you're content to continue to ponder, hang-wring and type. Good luck with that.

10. Thanks.
I appreciate the encouragement.

We got in this mess by not paying attention to the big picture. Well, they've got my attention!

Continuing to just roll over and take it won't do any of us any good.

15. We will need some supporting documents
That's a nice list of atrocities to protest against but can we get some official fact sheets and documentation for the less obvious cases.

8. Our protest on January 20 is against the war in Iraq
and not a protest against the Bush coronation. That's the consensus from the organizers which includes Veterans for Peace and the Peace and Justice Center. We want to pack downtown Indianapolis with antiwar veterans on that day!

11. Glad to hear it!
We've got something coming up on December 11 in Minneapolis. A march against the occupation in Iraq. I'm going to check with the organizers and see if they've notified the Minnesota veterans against the war. Coordination is key.

12. We're planning something
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 06:02 PM by Proud_Lefty
Our local Democracy for America group in Riverside Co., Calif. has been really busy since the election re-organizing and trying to reach out to other organizations, to combine forces and make a real impact on saving democracy. Unfortunately, we are all so passionate about our own individual positions, it has been a little challenging to say the least combining with others.

We are trying to organize rallies for Dec. 11, the 11th day of the month being symbolic and the Saturday before the Dec. 13th vote certification. We are focusing on the two top issues: our stolen election and the media that won't cover it. We are looking to have people all over either join a local rally in front of a busy place like a mall and, if you don't know of one, organize it. If you can't attend the rally for whatever reason, post a bumper sticker or two on your car, or go shopping with a black arm band or political tee shirt on. Everyone everywhere needs to show their protest in whatever way they can so that the sleeping people might finally wake up and ask, "What's happening?"

Anyway, our monthly meeting is coming up this week and we will be launching these ideas and seeking more, including efforts to expand the protests beyond our own group.

13. YES!
I'm in Colorado and I don't see anything going on here! Boulder is our most liberal county, college town and all taht, but NOTHING! State by state organized protests on a calender is a great idea! I would be willing to print up flyers and help to organize.

16. Ideas or Suggestions are Welcome
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on getting word out and the message will be basically the same, we can do a lot.

I will also post the additional information we have once the details are finalized on Wednesday.
