Dean too exciting for you ?
Yeah, Dean's speech made me fearful -- fearful that we're going to be weak-kneed and pick our nominee based on whether Karl Rove can find some aspect of them to make fun of or not. Once we've cut everyone with fire and a backbone (Dean first among them), we'll then get some bland milqutoast who will put the undecided voters to sleep during his TV commentary, and will then politely let Bush run all over him in a debate. We call that being civilized, empathetic and polite.

Let's not choose a docile whipping boy for *, Inc. I thought Dean's speech was inspiring, and that sort of theater should certainly appeal to the undecided 20% who may be turning to "scream radio" for their political direction.

I say it again: hear the Dean battle cry! "YEAAARGH!"

Not rant and rave like a complete lunatic.

to his team. Nothing wrong with that.

9. Coming from a Kucinich supporter no less.
Do you recall Dennis in a few of the debates where he got loud, angry, waved his arms, and YELLED OUT that he was going to cancel NAFTA and the WTO first thing?

I guess that wasn't lunatic tho. Hypocrisy where does thy lie?

13. You're kidding, right?
Kucinich is not the most eloquent of speakers, and I've heard him called shrill - considering some of his debate moments he does come off that way...

19. Yes...he does raise his voice occassionally
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 08:57 PM by AnAmerican
But overall his speech is measured and very powerful if you listen to the words. He speaks of his platform with eloquence and intelligence. His last few debates he has positively shined.

2. I don't think Dean is done.
I flipped around on cable for about 1/2 hr and saw CNN, CNBC and MSNBC continuously talking about Dean's speech from last night. All the commentators stated that his campaign is over. Somehow, I don't think it is. This might fire up his supporters even more.

24. the problem is, just as iowa proved, thousands of supporters
no matter how fired up, do not equate victory. how many supporters did he have in iowa as compared to say Edwards?

4. The Dean Scream
The Dean scream may work to his advantage. The little old ladies won't like it but a lot of us will. Many of the little old ladies aren't little, aren't old, and aren't ladies. They just act that way.

Considering what we've been through, a little screaming isn't entirely out of order.

27. Iowa Is Anomalous
I'm dismissing the Iowa results as anomalous until they are confirmed. As far as I'm concerned, the radar gun clocked the pine trees at 35 mph. I suspect a defect in the radar gun.

8. Will even 10% of the American people remember it in a week?
Look at the passes they give the Iraq war and Bush. In two weeks, no one who isn't a political junkie will even remember it...that is if they caught it the first time around.

as I was watching it last night, I had the immediate sense that this was Dean's "Dukakis in a tank" moment. I suspect we'll be hearing references to this speech for years to come.

17. Our local Dean organizer made a great point...
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 08:55 PM by ArtieBoy
...What about the sweaters? She thinks the sweaters just looked bad and may have sunk our man. If so, Clark had better run to the local Marshall's quick! I, too, feel that the sweaters our candidates are parading around in make them look like dull knives. They were good for Mr. Rogers, but not a presidential candidate.

But you guys are right -- in an America that made Hootie & the Blowfish a platinum-selling rock act, maybe mundane is more.

35. Not exciting, obnoxious.
Dean is an intemperate loudmouth with a bad habit of letting his speech get ahead of his brain. He has quite a track record of inflamed and vitriolic remarks that he's later either had to retract or make excuses for. He also has a notable anger problem. In temperament he is entirely too reminiscent of the foul-tempered cretin who currently occupies the White House. I'll support a candidate who can present calm, measured, rational, and cogent arguments for his position any day. Especially over one who acts like Henry V at Agincourt, as written by David Lynch, with a head full of crystal meth and psychotic anger.
