Jesse Helms Pleads to Keep Clinton Out of U.N.
CHARLOTTE, N.C - They may both be out of office, but Bill Clinton remains the ultimate boogeyman for former Sen. Jesse Helms. In a fund-raising a letter for his senatorial library, Helms invokes the specter of the former president leading the United Nations after Kofi Annan retires next year.

"I'm sure you might agree that putting a left-wing, undisciplined and ethically challenged former President of the United States into a position of such power would be a tragic mistake," wrote the 83-year-old Republican, who left office in 2003 after five terms.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter Tuesday. It contains a petition asking President Bush to "rebuke all efforts by Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and every other liberal in Congress to push for Bill Clinton to become Secretary-General of the United Nations."

6. Helms has lost it
Bill Clinton would make a great Secretary General. He's a centrist Democrat and a patriotic American. He enjoys considerable respect on the world stage. Who would Helms prefer ? John Ashcroft ? Ain't gonna happen. More Kofi Annan ? Sheesh !

There's something in the UN charter about who can be Secretary General.

17. U.N. Website worthless on this (grrrr)
Anyway the wikipedia only said that the Secretary rotates from region to region, with Asia being next in line. It did say that N. America has not had a Secretary.

It would seem a bit odd that permanent security council member countries should have the secretariat. On the other hand, given that those were the very countries that established the UN, would they have denied themselves this office ?

I think Clinton would be great as U.N Secretary General. He's a moderate, brilliant, and indeed a patriotic American. Hell, I'd back it just to piss off the Republicans.

How is Bill Clinton this left-wing radical? I guess if you're further to the Right than Atilla the Hun, then I guess that would explain it.

21. For different reasons, I agree with him
The last thing we need is an American as Secretary-General of the UN. The rest of the world is on the verge of overdose with America, trying to solve this by foisting another one on them -- even in the name of trying to project a good face to oppose the bad one -- is a mistake.

26. The key word of this article is "Fund-Raising Letter" and "Asia's Turn"
Seriously, if dumbass Jesse actually knew just a single iota about the United Nations, he'd know that the position for Secretary General rotates by regions and the next Secretary General will come from Asia.

Last I checked, Bill Clinton is a citizen of the United States and I'm sure there are several qualifed candidates from Asia who will take over this position.

Jesse is smart enough to know that Clinton is not qualified to be selected as the next UN S-G but knows that the folks who support idiots like Jesse Helms are also dumb enough to donate money to any cause that is anti-clinton.

The 2 most important sections of that Yahoo Story:

CHARLOTTE, N.C - They may both be out of office, but Bill Clinton (news - web sites) remains the ultimate boogeyman for former Sen. Jesse Helms. In a fund-raising a letter for his senatorial library, Helms invokes the specter of the former president leading the United Nations (news - web sites) after Kofi Annan (news - web sites) retires next year.

AND

Based on unofficial rules governing selection of U.N secretaries-general, Clinton seems an unlikely candidate. Selection of the secretary-general rotates by region; it is Asia's turn to choose the next U.N. leader and there are already several announced Asian candidates.
