Non-political people are telling me they liked Edwards
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 06:57 PM by Woodstock
when they saw him speak for the first time after doing well in Iowa this week. This is NOT to say only non-political people are impressed. I'm just saying he seems to make a good impression on those who are just looking in for the first time. And I keep hearing the women that he's cute. Don't laugh - that could pull in voters. I don't know a whole lot about Edwards - does he have any baggage? Seems to me, apart from being younger/less experience than the others, he doesn't. He's not "angry" or "stiff" and has a clear past presumably. He's from the south. Intelligent but down to earth. Appeals to working people. Sounds good to me... Compared to Bush he might seem a breath of fresh air to many. About foreign policy - does he have a good staff/strong stance on this?

1. John Edwards represents the people who have no voice...
...the people who are too busy to watch C-Span all day...

...the people who can't afford accountants but are taxed unfairly...

...the people who can't afford lobbyists but need their government to stand up for them...

...the people who can't save enough to go to college...

...the working people living in poverty that usually never vote...

He has made a career out of representing the rest of us against the people in power and when he speaks, the people who don't usually pay attention are tuning in.

2. Who's the nice one?
That's what my daughter's boyfriend, very non-political 26 year old, said to me. Good news Edwards people!

3. I heard that a lot before the caucus
Even people who were committed to another candidate would concede they really liked Edwards. I heard it before and during the caucus. I don't think I've talked to anyone that doesn't like him as a person.

5. One of his two major impediments is now gone
His major impediments were that he was too young and/or inexperienced, and that he didn't have a chance.

The latter statement is now gone like smog after the rains. Quibbling about his age or experience will continue, but now people know that he is ABSOLUTELY a contender.

My fingers are crossed.

Psst: he's a once in a generation kind of political force; he could clobber Junior and have coattails to spare.

6. "Non-political people": that is KEY!!!!
They are the ones who wind up electing the president (except in 2000 when the SCOTUS did it). This is what I have been predicting since 2002: Edwards has that 'touch'.

And no, he has no baggage; he beat senator Faircloth in 1998, who was form the helms machine. Had there been ANYTHING on him, they would have found it.

7. Nothing against Edwards
but that figures. He talks a good game about the common people, is good looking, charismatic and a good speaker. a lot of non-political people will like him.

That is something that will attract people

9. I've noticed the same thing!
But I always ask them why they may vote for him...

The answers are usually the same. He's a Vietnam vet, he supports universal healthcare, and one person even thought Edwards was from Nebraska...

These people often confuse Kerry with Edwards, and John Kerry with Bob Kerrey..and then Edwards with Kerrey. I heard one person say he would back Kerry because "he worked with Charlie Norwood on healthcare, he is a southerner, and he'll beat bush."

This happens so frequently now that when someone comes up to me with such an announcement, I ask "Did you mean John Kerry or Edwards?"

In response I always get a blank stare, and something like..."I don't know, which one was the Vietnam vet?"

10. He will be favorable to independents
I've been a registered voter in Iowa since 75 and have been to many political rally's. I was undecided between Kerry and Edwards. I went to see Kerry on Saturday and Edwards on Sunday. I walked out of the Edwards rally so fired up I couldn't believe it. I can't decide what the proper term is, but he has something I've never been witness too before. He will play well to independents.
