By Patricia Wilson

MANCHESTER, N.H. (Reuters) - Democratic White House hopeful Howard Dean (news - web sites), searching for the right message to arrest a slide in the polls, settled on Wednesday for the formula of plucky outsider taking on big money and timid politicians in Washington.
After his distant third in Iowa behind Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) and Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites) of North Carolina, Dean fought to get his campaign back on track in New Hampshire where a win in Tuesday's primaries has become crucial to his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Dean's message will be that as governor of Vermont for more than 11 years he achieved actual results -- balancing budgets, providing health care -- unlike his rivals in the Senate, a senior campaign adviser said.

He will couple that with a call to get big money out of politics by cutting individual donations from $2,000 to $250 and pointing out that he -- unlike his major Democratic opponents and Republican President Bush (news - web sites) -- is not beholden to special interests.

Dean's record in Vermont is impressive.

No other campaigns can match what Dean has.

Unless, the military thing impresses you.
