So Republicans Want To Institute A VETERAN TAX
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 09:52 PM by cryingshame
Now here's something Democrats could slaughter the GOP with.

Just because GOP wants to call it a "fee" doesn't mean we can't point out it's a TAX.

Yes, we tax children too, for being born to the tune of billions in National Debt.

2.4 Million Veterans Will Pay New Fee

Republican majorities on the House and Senate veterans' affairs committees have voted to impose an enrollment fee of at least $230 a year on 2.4 million veterans - one of every three now eligible for Veterans Affairs Administration health care.

Those targeted are in priority categories 7 and 8, meaning they are neither poor nor suffering from service-connected disabilities. Half of the 2.4 million used the VA health system last year.

The Bush administration proposed the enrollment fee to hold down costs. The VA committees rejected another Bush proposal to raise co-payments on VA-filled prescriptions for these same priority 7 and 8 veterans.

While both committees endorsed enrollment fees, differences emerged. The Senate panel, chaired by Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, embraced the Bush plan for a straight $250 annual fee.

3. Link please
If this is true it is an outrage! We owe so much to our veterans. They deserve the very best, and this Progressive is very willing to have his taxes raised so they get it! No vet should ever be homeless! I recently saw (sorry, I can't recall where) that half a million vets are homeless. We treated our Civil War vets better than this! In some states following the Civil War the biggest budget items was to care for vets. Incidentally, I am not a vet.

4. My father is a WWII Vet
fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He's on Social Security and can hardly afford a payment like that.

22. This is so disgusting and awful
 Use and abuse them. Truly. *sigh* If the right-wingers really supported the troops they'd be kicking out the Bush administration over all this. If they can get a President over a BJ ugh. :argh:

14. Yep.. "500,000 homeless vets and Bush wants to impose a veterans' tax"
Juxtapose those two facts and you really get an ugly picture. Those 500,000 homeless vets obviously don't have the resources to PAY a $250 a year fee.

8. Heard about this Earlier! No one is safe!
No one! Between our so-called media, this stinkin rotten evil adm, their repuk followers, both on the hill and off make me sick. Without reading your posting, I believe it was taxing them $250 and then some.

Oh, but they're just loosing life and limbs for us. When they return, then they get to suffer from Post Tramatic Stress Syndrome - that's all. Then what they hell, tax-um!

Come on Freepers! We're all Americans and all in this together, in case you haven't noticed. If all of us as American's do not start stand-up for our rights and civil liberties, you, your families and grandchildren will suffer, too.

I don't get that they don't get-it!?!

11. Read my lips, Bush. Stop fiddling with the symptoms,
who just happen to be PEOPLE. VETERANS. Who fought for AMERICA to help it or to SAVE IT, though the last war that involved saving America was WW II...

They did not fight so that you could fuck it up in your quest to make the rich richer at the expense of the poor and poorer.

Maybe the kids of today are seeing you whittle away and shatter vet benefits and deciding NOT TO JOIN UP. I can't blame them. Who has the right to? Right after 9/11, many wanted to help America. Rightfully so. And with the monsterous acts you're doing, Mr Bush, you still expect people to sign up in droves? If so, then you really are high on something or totally ignorant of what's going on.

Please fix the core problem: Outrageous health costs and deregulated price controls. Re-regulate them. Tort reform is only part of the issue; you know that the corporate sect won't voluntarily do ANYTHING. They need to be controlled. Just as do the rest of us.

Remember, "there ought to be limits to freedom". That does NOT exclude corporate freedom to be degenerate greedy asswipes.

16. Rush to judgement
There is plenty about this that stinks, but we don't need to say that it will affect homeless Vets, unless it does.

"Those targeted are in priority categories 7 and 8, meaning they are neither poor nor suffering from service-connected disabilities. Half of the 2.4 million used the VA health system last year."

Now, if that statement isn't true--if Bush is aspplying this $250 "fee" towards vets who are low income/homeless/etc...then the call is justified.

Until then, stick to the idea of a Veterans Tax.

We knew Bush would have to pay for his Millionaire's Club tax breaks somehow, but who would have thought that he would force it onto the backs of our Vets, who have already carried this country so well and so far?

Makes that $300 tax credit/bribe that Bush sent out a little less sweet, doesn't it?

The sheeples need to pay more attention to what * and the rethugs do and less attention to what the say.

Our troops and our veterans deserve better than lip service. Supporting our troops means more than platitudes. They and their families should be livid.

24. Good point, and the national debt is a "birth tax"..
since they were so fond of calling the inheritance tax a a"death tax".

I can't think of a better time to pay taxes then after I die. Or do they really believe they can take it with them?
