The Republicans can't keep their smear campaigns straight
I'm confused.

I've been hearing from Republican posters on other boards for years now how evil Sen. Robert Byrd, D.-WVa., is because in his youth he was a member of the Klan.

Now, I see they are targeting Byrd's seat and plan to attack him because ... he's an ultra-liberal!!!! WTF??

National Republicans set sights on Byrd

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The GOP intends to defeat Sen. Robert C. Byrd by declaring him "the most liberal member of the Senate'' if he runs for re-election as expected in 2006, a Republican official said Thursday.

"The National Republican Senatorial Committee believes that West Virginia has moved out from under Sen. Byrd politically,'' group spokesman Brian Nick said.

The GOP slapped the same tag on fellow Democratic Sen. John Kerry in last year's presidential race. But Nick said that was based on Kerry's votes for only a few years. As the Senate's longest-serving member at 47 years, Byrd offers a much larger voting record, Nick said.

So which is it? An evil racist Klansman or "the most liberal member of the Senate?"

Maybe he's both. Yeah, that's it! Byrd must be the head of the liberal wing of the Ku Klux Klan.

How clever of those Republicans to figure out Byrd's evil plan.

1. He supports marriage between gay Klan members...
and especially African-American Klan members.

2. They really don't need to be consistent
They just shout "liberal!" and the monkeys get into a frenzy. Soon, with all the monkeys grunting, no rational debate can be heard underneath the monkeys.

3. But I thought Kerry was the most liberal member
of the Senate. Of course, I don't expect most voters will still remember that little detail by 2006. And then by 2008, it will be Hillary, assuming she gets the nomination.

It must be pretty nice for BushCo having a population with such incredibly short attention spans.

5. They can't decide who the most "liberal member of the Senate" is
First it was Kennedy, then it was Kerry, then it was Boxer, and now it's Byrd. I'm taking bets on next week. Any takers?

6. Why are Republicans so afraid of liberal ideas?

lib·er·al Pronunciation Key (lbr-l, lbrl) adj.
Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

Yeah, so, uh, what's the downside to that?

Can't someone just stand up and say "damn right I'm liberal"? I hope Byrd (and the rest of the Dems) stand up to the smear artists.

How long will it take for them to call in the Swift Boat liars?

8. I'm sorry, the most liberal member of the Senate is John Kerry
they'll have to find another label. That one's taken.
