1. Multiple Groups, including DUers Loring Park, Minneapolis, Mn
Minneapolis pics taken by MN DUer Dodger 501 at http://www.dodgerdigital.com/rally

At the speaker rally afterward, they announced the head count leaving Loring Park, Minneapolis, MN was 1,500. As far as I know we got zero news coverage, although I think there was a reporter from Kare11 taking pics.

We were lucky. There were 2 cop cars (purely to handle traffic) and there was one freeper. I drove by and told her "You're on the wrong side of history, babe."

My friend and I never did find a parking place until after the march had ended. We are one of the gold cars in the huge traffic jam on Lyndale. We kept chasing the protest march around thinking we could park and jump out and get in line, but there were NO parking places available.

45. Mainstream Media WON'T Report THIS. Nominate IT - DU, please?
I'm begging you. I can do this alone, but WHY should I?

Isn't this important to anyone else?

The media lockdown has longtime activists discouraged at a time when we have DOUBLED the number of protests and when people who NEVER protested are getting involved.

I'm so MAD I could cry in frustration and in joy. There is a REAL Democratic Underground MOVEMENT here. A lot of US are part of it, but we feel alone and we AREN'T.

DON'T you SEE How IMPORTANT this Message IS?

I know. I know. Snappy HEADLINES are what scoops the DU. I scooped Will Pitt on one of his own articles. OK here's a redirect for you....

57. THANK YOU !!! Now I can go eat !
I've been working on this last night and today to get it some momentum and I was being SO stubborn. I KNEW there was more to this than I was initially seeing.

There were so many planned protests - about 530 reported prior to 3/19 and 765 have checked in so far today. Then I found out last years number was 319 and we've gone twice that... I know I am about twice as committed as I was last year at this time... at least that much... ok too obsessed to eat until I knew this thread could carry on.

So if this has impacted me this much what about everyone else?

ANOTHER tool the repugs are using is classic ISOLATION and it's WHY the DU is so important in getting this message out.

WE ARE NOT participating in ISOLATED and USELESS protests. WE ARE ALL CONNECTED. Even one lone protester in front of Taco Bell in Florida is part of the MASSIVE Movement to SPEAK TRUTH to POWER.

There is a power greater than ALL of US and contrary to GWII it isn't him.

42. INDY News Source SAYS...
http://houston.indymedia.org

<snip> Dunleavy Park

A march of between 200 and 300 people gathered at Dunleavy Park, and marched down Richmond Avenue, to Montrose where they headed south over highway 59 to Bell Park at Banks and Montrose. Among those present was a bike bloc of around 25 people, a antiwar profiteering bloc, and a fantastic sound system. At Bell Park, there was a long list of speakers, and a dance off with the 5 or 6 Protest Warriors who demonstated that they love the american flag and can not dance

http://houston.indymedia.org/news/2005/03/38045.php

<snip> (Now I get the MASK thing. Doh!)
Last night, Code Pink Houston activists took to the downtown streets for a walking requiem in honor of troops and civilians who've lost their lives in Iraq. KPFT News reporter Dianne Roberts says activists walked in pairs... with one person reading the names of coalition soldiers, and the other wearing a gag to represent the iraqi dead. The two disparate groups symbolized the difference in the way US media and government count the unnecessary losses of the Iraq war.

Looks like SOMEONE in Houston is holding GWI accountable for the blood on America's hands.

7. Hollywood, CA
There were about 2,000 people marching. It was an amazing experience. I'll post some photos when I get them developed.

Also, we were marching by the tourist mall at Hollywood and Highland and a lot of tourists were watching. I guess just an added bonus to their trip to LA. B-)

9. 2,000! Wow! I KNEW the numbers would be Huge....
even if the news isn't reporting them.

During bushits European Tour there were 12-15,000 people protesting in Mainz Germany during the weekend and the day he arrived. I'm not sure if it was a Friday or a Monday when he was in Mainz, but they showed the empty streets. The government sent * on an alternate route for his safety. US under reported all European protests.

There were 1,000 in Brussels. 3-4,000 in Spain. No news coverage.

So I knew even if we got great numbers the pugs would try to supress it. That's why I posted this thread, so we can get a real count.

8. About 30 in Fort Myers, Florida but that is GOOD
And we stood along the highway at a big intersection with our signs - spreading out about 10 feet apart so we had a big line. We got a lot of horn honking, (good - we had a big sign saying "Honk if you want the war to stop)

My friend's son is in Iraq now and she was carrying a sign saying, "Bring my baby home" When she left I held it for her. I was way up past most of the sign holders and it was amazing how many people just stared at me. I think that sign really hit home.

One guy yelled out, "Get a Job" which was really funny because it is Saturday, (dumb fuck!). And one started screaming stupid things like, "You're a bunch of fags". These freepers are so intelligent!

So in a town that is very RED we got a lot of people to see the truth about the war. I consider it a big success and it was a good place to do it because that intersection is big and congested. People who didn't want to see anything about the war got it right in their faces.

10. My Republican friend gave me a ride to the protest.
She says she "sees old guys out on this particular corner all the time with signs protesting the war," which has been getting to her.

I've also read some other reports about the effect of the few in a very hostile environment.

We had one person holding a Bush sign accross the street from the Loring Park Rally. Even though I disagree with her, told her she was on the wrong side of history, I had to admire her willingness to stand up for her beliefs in a peaceful dignified manner, all by herself. Now that's cahjones!

Today when my friend saw 1,500 marching from Loring Park and heard the speakers talking about the problems we face she was proud to have been there with me. Said it was very informative.

She's a pro-lifer and otherwise I think she would be a DEM.

My independent friends at work look to me for things they can say to repugs. I'm the leftist propoganda source even though I'm a tough minded moderate DEM who is just beginning to warm up to the progressive side of things.

Democrat puppet organizations misdirecting anti-war movement

( I don't agree with everything they say, but I defend their right to say it. At least this looks a lot more like Democracy to me.)

AND BurrowOwl, you aren't the only one discouraged. I was really down for a while and it gets to me time and again. I would have gone down for the count if I hadn't picked up Paul Loeb's book, "The Impossible Will Take Awhile." I bought it on Buzzflash.com to support the news groups that were actually bringing me news.

I know Plaid Adder has said spoken about how discouragement and there's an article in this INDY paper about someone who left the march after 4 1/2 minutes. His big peeve? Donations being solicited in KFC Buckets. If someone is ready to give up, they will find a reason. He's got some good points I guess, but nothing is ever going to get me as concerned about the death of a chicken as the death of a human being.
http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2005/03/313828.shtml

The funny thing is in many areas people who have never protested or participated in politics are getting involved and there is a learning curve, so we need the people who are just now getting really worn down by the struggle to share their wisdom now that people are open to hear it.

I went to MY first war/Occupation protest yesterday. I took a Republican. It was great, but our most of our speakers didn't have the skills to rally over 1,500 people or even talk in front of 300 at the end of the line when most had gone to rescue their cars from the parking meters.

My count, done by counting ranks & estimating file & then multiplying, did not come up with 1000, BUT ..... , get ready, people. The "official" police "count" was 230 (!), according to AP, & that is what AP policy dictates be used in stories, the "official" police count. It's unfair, & it's infuriating, because PPB is underestimating intentionally, as a dis to the Movement. AP's story, & thus PPB's lie, will now travel the world. If PPB claims that somebody actually counted, either that somebody is an idiot, or they are liars. Or maybe they don't use base 10!

39. Well, it looks almost as big as the Minneapolis Protest.
Ours only counted people leaving from the Loring Park to march and there were people picked up and people who dropped out of the march along the way, but a solid 1,500 were counted.

When I first saw the Portland pics, 1,000 didn't seem too off. Besides your organizers may have counted people they know were there, but doing set up and such as well.

I have an idea for a cheap way to confirm counts - ribbons for participants and a secondary item, one of those plastic kids rings, just a little round ring with nothing on it to drop in buckets to be counted later.

Then you can see by the ribbons on their arms who has been counted, mail ribbons out in advance to those who register, but in case they don't show up, the ring in the bucket is an easy confirmation.

Handing a ribbon to someone and dropping a ring in the bucket as they head off to march can be done quickly and efficiently. Much more accurate than rank and file.

Kind of like a voter paper trail or a reciept. What do you think?

1:00 pm rally at Fountain Square...many local sponsoring groups including the Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center.. Good speeches (a Muslim woman was co-MC) and some live music. BUT..cold and rainy...about 200 by my guesstimate...no idea of media coverage. It was worth it.

22. FANTASTIC! News from Oregon
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 02:55 PM by Tigress DEM
Ruffhowse says that attendence at the Portland, OR protest was good and that media coverage was also good.

They have and INDY Media Source that (unlike the mainstream newspaper the Oregonian) I didn't have to sign in to get to and here are the numbers I found:

http://portland.indymedia.org PEACE 19-Mar-2005 20:15

<snip> Bend Oregon
About 110 people showed up for the event.

(The Corporate Flag made it's appearance in Bend, a RED city BTW)
< >

<snip> Portland M19 Peace March
From the open publishing newswire: About 1000 people took to the streets of Portland today to protest the war and occpation of Afghanistan and Iraq. The march wound through downtown, stopping briefly at the Oregonian to upbraid them for their slanted coverage of the occupation and U.S. Policy in general.

(WOW! THIS is a GREAT Protest Sign - SPEAKING TRUTH to Power!)

< >

(OH MY - You Oregonians, unlike the paper, tell it like it is!)

< >

< >

< >

AND LOOK AT THAT CROWD!!! WONDERFUL JOB PORTLAND!

36. Those Young People Hold THE KEY to turning this around....
When WE as DEMs and Progressives STAND and protect not only OUR Country and OUR Freedoms, but those whose opinions are causing US SO MUCH Grief...... when our Young DEMS see that getting carried away and saying hurtful things to the opposition HURTS all us DEMs too, then WOW it turns things totally around.

A young Republican who came to support the War and probably expected to be harrassed, but NEVER expected to be supported in her right to speak her opinion by DEMs has had a life changing event take place in her life.

She said, "These guys came and protected me and offered to walk me to my car," she said. "These guys are my heroes."

If SHE ever gets her hands on the TRUTH about Bush, what those young people did will help her believe it.

I salute those guys, WOW.

30. Sisters of St. Benedict - 200 strong in Ferdinand, Indiana
Per LeftIsRight's post they " rallied around their peace pole in a prayer/peace vigil marking the second year of the War in Iraq."

Nice Little Website with some REAL Christian Guidelines.

http://www.thedome.org/sisters/rule.html

Anyone sick of right wing crap will find this inspiring reading.

<snip>
Benedict's genius was to understand that each person's rough edges—all the defenses and pretensions and blind spots that keep the monastic from growing spiritually—are best confronted by living side by side with other flawed human beings whose faults and failings are only too obvious. St. Benedict teaches that growth comes from accepting people as they are, not as we would like them to be.

(Sounds like the DU to me)

<snip> (On leadership)
The exercise of authority in the Rule points more to mercy than justice, more to understanding of human weakness than strict accountability, more to love than zeal. What defines the leader of a Benedictine community is not being head of an institution but being in relationship with all the members.

(Leaders of people who lead because they have developed understanding relationships with those who follow them. WOW. If politicians could aspire to that... even if they fell miles short, it would be so wonderful. Even if we could get that moving from the grass roots up, it could change our world.)

<snip>
"Let everyone that comes be received as Christ" is one of the most familiar and oft-quoted phrases of the Rule. It emphasizes the preeminent position which hospitality occupies in every Benedictine monastery. Benedictine hospitality goes beyond the exercise of the expected social graces—the superficial smile or the warm reception of expected guests. Hospitality for Benedict meant that everyone who comes—the poor, the traveler, the curious, those not of our religion or social standing or education—should be received with genuine acceptance.

(So THESE are the people Jesus will be saying to, "Whenever you did for the least among us, you were doing it to me." )

Alaskans for Peace & Justice organized our protest here in Anchorage, although other groups were involved. I thought there were about a hundred people; the newspaper reported 150. We had a LOT of support from the passing motorists, and I personally didn't see any opposition. I'm starting to suspect that our town may be bluer than people thought (aside from the ANWR thing).

ed. - And about the Christians? The Peace & Justice people regularly meet at a Presbyterian church here. Their pastor spoke briefly but eloquently yesterday.

<snip> (ONE AWESOME Demonstration!)

BOSTON – On the second anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, a group of local activists staged a dramatic protest outside the Armed Forces Recruiting Center at 650 American Legion Highway in Roslindale. At noon, the Boston Direct Action Project dumped five gallons of fake blood and then took up positions on the doorstep. The activists portrayed a dead Iraqi woman, her grieving husband, a dead U.S. soldier and his grieving wife.

buried on Page 10 of the Metro section, but still we were covered. The paper stated approx. 150 marching at that at times the crowd swelled to 200 once we arrived at Miller Park. It truly was a great day. I was hugged by a vet, patted on the back by a couple of others, and about 8 more were laughing at one of our signs and the fact that I had printed slips of paper with the phone numbers and web addresses of each branch of the military to hand to any hecklers.

Our prayer for peace and the candlelit was a somber way to end the event and it was great to be with folks whose energy was for peace and justice and not negative.

Thanks to all who marched!!!

I would say that at its peak there were at least 800 people. Previous rallies there have been much bigger, I was a little disappointed in the turnout but it was still really good.

No media coverage yet that I can find. But it just happened today (Sunday) so hopefully tomorrow.

Congressman Dingell spoke, as did Ann Arbor's excellent Mayor John Hieftje. The rally was at a local night club (!) and after we marched all through town and back there was a band (or more?) at the club, although I didn't stay long.

Over 200 Demonstraters from the greater Grand Traverse Region stood in a late season blizzard on the 2nd anniversary of the US occupation of Iraq.

100,000 PLUS Dead, U.S. Out of Iraq!, and Enough is Enough! These were the themes of the day for over 200 demonstrators in Traverse City, Michigan on Saturday March 19. Even as a late season blizzard blanketed the region, residents from the greater Grand Traverse area gathered for a day of protest and mourning for the 10,000’s Iraqi deaths under U.S. occupation, in addition to the 1,500 U.S.

We had by my estimate between 100 and 150 for a rally and march in downtown Iowa City today. Organized by the UI antiwar committee in cooperation with several other local groups who contributed speakers.

I think this is the best turnout we have had here since shortly after the invasion. It probably would have been better yet if this past week had not been spring break.

Media Downplay Historic Day of Protests
By Scott Galindez
t r u t h o u t | Report

Sunday 20 March 2005

<snip> (Note *CNN International and *CNN US being compared below.)

Fayetteville, NC -- The second anniversary of the war was the impetus for major demonstrations throughout the world. In the United States, over 800 communities held events calling for an end to the occupation.

*CNN, however, reported that in the United States "barely a ripple was made while large protests took place in Europe." The New York Times reported that protests in the United States ranged from 350 people in Times Square to thousands in San Francisco. Later in the same story, the Times reported that several thousand marched from Harlem to Central Park. If thousands marched in New York, why did the Times highlight the 350 in Times Square?

*CNN's report was worse … nothing about US protests. While they only saw a ripple, a huge wave passed them by. If CNN had been in Fayetteville, North Carolina, they would have seen what could be a major turning point in the anti-war movement. The largest Anti-war protest ever in this heavily military town took place.

Maybe the Gazette was confused and only counting people in one pic.

71. Welcome to the DU Zimmer!!
:hi:

I don't know if you've seen the post where I tell about how I chased my Peace march all over town, couldn't find a parking place and got my picture not in the crowd scene itself, but in the traffic jam behind it!

Still I made it to the speakers rally afterward and I saw quite a bit of the march from many angles. I got our official count at the rally and they had counted only the people who marched out, so the number may have been a bit low. 1,500 at the Loring Park, Minneapolis, MN event.

73. Your INDY News Service SAYS...over 250 people!
http://madison.indymedia.org

<snip>
OVER 250 PEOPLE BRAVED SNOW AND SLUSH TO GATHER OUTSIDE A MILITARY RECRUITING STATION ON MADISON'S EASTSIDE TO MARK THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF BAGHDAD AND THE BEGINNING OF THE MOST RECENT WAR AGAINST IRAQ.

SPONSORING GROUPS, WHICH INCLUDED THE MADISON AREA PEACE COALITION, IRAQ PLEDGE OF RESISTANCE, AND THE LOCAL CHAPTER OF VETERANS FOR PEACE WERE SURPRISED AND SOMEWHAT PLEASED TO FIND THAT THE RECRUITING STATION, WHOSE POSTED SATURDAY HOURS WERE 10-2, WAS INEXPLICABLY CLOSED FOR THE DAY. THE CLOSING WAS TERMED BY ONE ORGANIZER AS AN INITIAL VICTORY THAT SHE HOPED WOULD BE REPEATED ON SUBSEQUENT VISITS.

THE CROWD INCLUDED MILITARY VETERANS AND PACIFISTS, YOUNG AND OLD. SOME WERE AT THEIR FIRST DEMONSTRATION, OTHERS HAD BEEN PROTESTING US WARS AND MILITARISM FOR OVER FOUR DECADES. ONE SEASONED ANTIWAR ACTIVIST IN ATTENDANCE WAS LOU BERRYMAN, SHE SAID THIS MORNING'S DEMONSTRATION WAS A CONTINUATION OF THE ONE SHE HAD MARCHED IN TWO YEARS AGO TODAY.

1516 popsickle stick crosses and banners with messages promoting inquiry and education are simply "inappropriate" to High School administrators.

<>

Last week at Patrick Henry High School, students from a group known as Students Advocating Greater Awareness consensed on taking action at their school in lieu of the second anniversary of the War in Iraq.

They made 1516 popsickle stick crosses in the quad surrounding a banner that read, "ASK YOUR RECRUITER." The action took place at night, so that by the time kids arrived at school the demonstration would be there for all to see. However, sometime before school started the administration had the crosses and banners taken down...

Later that day, the military recruiters walked on to campus with pull up bar and all. The administration greeted them with smiles and surely pointed them to

83. Honolulu: 300. "This is what democracy looks like..."
our figure, given out at the rally afterwards in Ala Moana Beach Park. (Organizers: Always hold your rallies near major shopping areas if at all possible, so your protestors can stock up on books and food afterwards. :-) )

TV news coverage on at least two channels was sullied by craven attempts to contrast our rally with the vigil held that evening at the Capitol. Cluephone: The vigil was ALSO attended by many who oppose the war, including some of the SPEAKERS, dipshits!

We had one of those open-air trolleys available for those with mobility limitations. Anyone else planning demos in a touristy area where those are available should definitely look into that.
