"It made headlines the other day when Tom Slade, who engineered Gov. Jeb Bush's emergence as a political powerhouse, voiced some of the same criticisms as Bush's Democratic critics, calling him ``arrogant'' and saying he ``does not have the maturity ... and wisdom'' to be president.
Slade, the former state chairman of the Republican Party, only offered for the record what many state Republicans have long said in private.
Bush is a strong and innovative leader. Floridians saw him at his best during the hurricane crisis, when he was both resolute and compassionate. But as Slade told a University of South Florida political scientist who is writing a history of the Florida Republican Party, Bush has a ``dictatorial'' style and does not welcome advice or compromise.
High-handedness has been evident throughout his tenure. A few examples:
* When some GOP lawmakers opposed the governor's plan to limit medical malpractice rewards, he accused them of ``jeopardizing people's access to health care.'' In fact, they only wanted a more reasonable cap on malpractice rewards..."
