The Pharisees were actually the precursor to extant Judaism. They even rejected political action. They did follow strict rituals which Jesus was rather against. Jesus could be seen as a liberal offshoot from the Pharisees. Jesus wanted to break down the barriers between the average person and God.

I thought all Christians were like this. I grew up in southwest missouri. I have rarely been anywhere else but that is about to change.
