4. The GOP attack machine is given free rides by the corporate media
machine.

We are not.
Hell...we can't even get the truth published/broadcast.

7. Our 'leaders' fucking SUCK. Complicit, paid off, or just wimps.
Take your pick.

We have maybe a handful of fighters for democracy -the rest are WORTHLESS.

8. Other: we lack the infrastructure.

Fox News. Rupert Murdoch. Sun-Myung Moon. Massive Republican donors, and on top of that they've created a veritable trough of hate for the Republican party to feed in. The Democrats just don't have a readily available communication apparatus in place in order to counterbalance these thugs. Air America is a start, but just a start.

10. All of the above, sometimes more one than another depending on
any given situation.

And I just don't know how to turn that around so that the left can be... hard as nails and also the respectful people that they are by nature.

I see this in my own personal life all the time. I am a pluralist when it comes to faith. Hubby is a conservative evangelical. We always go to his church of choice because I, by nature, believe I can find _something_ of worth there (even if I depise some of what they say) whereas he insists there is nothing for him but danger to his salvation in the churches I would go to.

"Because we are the latte-sipping wimps they say we are"

Not us here per se, but those in 'leadership'. No doubt.

13. Other: Republican Party was almost dead.

It's the early 70s and Democrats have ruled the House for forty years. There's a Republican in the White House. But between founding the EPA, openly embracing Keynesian economic policies and mocking the John Birch society while launching Detente putting an end to the decades long seige of the Soviet Union, Nixon is one of the most liberal Republicans around. Then that same president caps it all off with Watergate. Conservative had become synonymous with bigotry and incompetence.

It is no wonder prominent conservatives like William F. Buckley were calling for an end to the Republican Party so a new conservative party could emerge in its place.

The haves were desperate. So they retrenched, invented "think-tanks", established grants for conservatives willing to enter journalism, etc.

The Democratic Party is nowhere near that level of desperation even now. We're down what: 3 Senate seats and 15 House seats? Under these circumstances, McAuliffe and the beltway boys were quite willing to continue sitting on their hands. Unfortunately for them an upswelling of grassroot activism pushed them out of the way. And so our retrenching has just now begun.

This is why the RNC has full time offices in all 50 states while the DNC just opened their first 4 state offices this year.

14. Lack of unity in the party
The idea of a national party is that we come together for strength in numbers. But because we have so many splintered factions that cannot comprimise or agree we cannot get a strong and clear platform. This leaves us disorganized and disasterous come elections time.

We NEED a strong clear platform that those who would be members of the party abide by and discipline in our ranks.

Cheers

nothing to learn from the GOP or Karl Rove in that regard.

16. Other: for the same reason we don't have an in-house booking
agency and interns typing up press releases 24/7--we don't have the Heritage Foundation, tax-exemptidly figuring ways to smash everything good Americans hold dear.

The RW has all that and more, and until we look at what that means for us, we are at a severe disadvantage.
