So how long till the Rove story dissapears into nothingness?
Oh, I know. We're all so cute with our furrowed brows and our proclamations of "THIS time they are going down!", and how we all eat up any last scrap the media throws us that sounds vaguely, sort of like a difficult question, and how we really think it's going to be different this time.

But as we're seeing now the same routine, again and again. A legitimate story breaks, the media sheepishly pokes it's head out to see if it's safe with a maybe possibly slightly difficult question, only to be barked at by the pit bulls on the right and put back in their place. All the right needs to do is give a statement of denial to have their 40% sheep flock gobble it up and regurgitate it, and then spew enough confusing talking points out there to put doubts in the heads of the 20% mushy middle who will chalk it up to "Well both sides are corrupt and do this kind of stuff...i just don't like politics."

So yeah, Fitzgerald could get a case and indictment against Rove which is all going to hinge on "knowningly" and "intentionally" and all those other vague terms.

I hate to be the cynic but I've been burned too many times on this stuff. The media controls the discourse and they in turn allow the right to bully them into submission. I'm betting by the end of next week this whole Rove thing is all but completely MIA in the mainstream media. God, I hope I'm wrong but I haven't been in the past on this stuff.

1. I give it a couple of weeks
I would love to be proved wrong but not since Nicholas and Alexandra has a regime been so isolated from the tides of public opinion.

23. My guess . . .
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 09:04 AM by djg21
Shrub will name a Sup Ct. nominee ahead of schedule (he previously said not until the end of July). I wouldn't be surprised if it happens later this week, before the Sunday talk shows. I then suspect that the Repukes will talk Rehnquist into retiring, so the media can fixate on the dual appointments. Actually, Shrub will announce his nominations of two justices, AND his nomination of Scalia or Thomas to the position of Chief judge. The speculation about three nearly simultaneous confirmation hearings will really drive the media into a frenzy and bury the Plame issue.

4. This story isn't going away! They WISH! Many in media are pissed too...
Sorry to break your pessimistic rant, but this story isn't going to go away...its further along than that and when the indictments come, the media isn't going to be silent....

Yes, the media controls the discourse but this time its personal...I hope your wrong too....:hi:

8. Well, I'll place my money on you then....
I could admittedly use some more optimism than I'm presently able to muster up.

And if you're right, I'll happily buy you a drink (figuratively speaking of course).

6. If indictments come down the story sticks
otherwise it will of course disappear. If no indictments come down the grand jury deciede there wasn't enough evidence to pursue a criminal case. Obviously the media would then not bother to cover the case.

Certainly the story will fade as time passes with no action from the grand jury over the next few weeks (though who knows maybe the indictments are imminent). Withouth them there simply isn't any real story beyond political corruption and underhanded tactics (which, as we know, the media simly ignores these days).

7. I'm sorry to say that I agree. Nearly all the media is owned by the WH.
Now they have this Tomlinson slob running NPR and he is trying to turn it into a propaganda medium. I have been yelled at for saying that IMO Fitzgerald is a plant to make this come out right for Bush**-Rove. He is tough prosecutor; why would they appoint him? Maybe he is tough enough to fix it their way too.

22. This story has been around for two years....
...and it never made it into the news beyond a mere mention...UNTIL FITZGERALD PUT JUDITH MILLER IN JAIL. That's what brought this whole thing into the headlines. Fitzgerald did not have to do that!! If he were a plant, he could have brought this whole thing to a conclusion without so much as a blimp on the radar screen of the MSM.

With Bush's numbers down and support for him waning in every area, there couldn't be a worse time for something like this to dominate the air ways. If they did plan this...then either it backfired on them or their karma has come due and nothing can stop it.

9. Even if Rove does "go down", he'll get a pardon and make a nice
living as a consultant and/or radio/TV personality.

See Nixon, Liddy (who wasn't even pardoned), and North, among others.

10. My vote is for not going away
The media IS pissed off. They've seen that there are too many questionable facts coming into light these past few months, the pRez'a ratings are on a roller coaster and there's a LOT of people raving for the truth. IMHO, it's not going to go away, even if Rove isn't indicted - other things will come out of this.

11. But if they were truly pissed...
Would they be having on Newt Gingrich and Ken Mehlman to talk about the case without any liberal or democratic foil to counter their spin?

12. That's CNN - I don't think they're going to jump ship until
the very end. Newt is just an ass and Mehlman is an even bigger ass. Did you see him talking yesterday? and did I hear him correctly when asked by Wolf about yesterday's nominee meeting that "they can't worry about solving the American people's problems"??? Did I hear him say that?

13. Sad to say you're probably right
Sorry to state the cliched obvious but with a Corporate/State media these days, and without a mass movement constantly exerting pressure in creative ways, all we will get will be the rare view of reporters showing what they can do when emboldened....until their corporate masters reel them back in.

15. The second that
the NYT reporter, Judy Miller, is released. This reaction in the MSM is only because poor little Judy got sent to the slammer... there, but for the grace of God, go they... if you knowwhat I mean. They are just pissed off that one of their own is being punished.

That's my opinion, anyway. I think the minute she's sprung, this story goes away.

18. I don't think that this story will dissapear and here's why.
There are three groups of people in the US, maybe even the world, that you just don't mess with. Third is big money. Big money can hound you, make your life miserable, and even get you killed. Second is the FBI or relevant agency. Look at J. Edgar Hoover to what they can do to you. The worst of all, though, is the national intelligence agency, be it CIA, MI6, Mossad, whatever. No matter what the country these are NOT the type of people you want to be on their bad side. Think about it. These are the type of people who will be more than happy to wait years to no just kill you, but "dissapear" you. Rove is toast as a warning to Bush. You just don't mess with the Agency no matter what. They will get you in the end.

19. I would be very SURPRISED if the US Media...
...didn't let the story go away. They let Bush get away with SO MUCH. Most of the Media is unter Bush control. It will take MORE than this (and there is much more hidden, no doubt).

21. Rove is damaged goods...
Personally, I hope he doesn't resign. Repugs here at work are embarassed by him, and "independents" (people too lazy to think about the issues) here see him for what he is; a petty political hack and traitor.

24. I'm encouraged by the fact that Darth Dick has not been out there
telling anyone to go Cheney themselves and doing his usual blatant lying and smearing people in public. Of course this could be because he is having his pacemaker replaced.

In general though, there has been no comment from elected Republican officials, no Frist, no McCain, they are all laying low. This could be strategy of course, but I'd prefer to interpret it as fear to be on record supporting Rove. He is kryptonite, if he had any real friends, instead of just cowed enemies, they would be speaking up. Instead just the whore poodle press on Faux and other stations is attempting to do damage control. I don't think that'll work this time, it smacks of desperation. I hope I'm right.

The WH press corps really seems pissed, look at what they've done in just the two days they haven't been under Rove's thumb. I do think they need encouragement to continue however. It would be great to let the stations know that we support the reporters asking real questions and follow-ups and that we despise the ones still continueing to 'catapault the propaganda' into our homes. I really want Fox's viewership to go down precipitously, send a message that we don't want this kind of drek masquerading as news anymore.

25. I wish people would quit all the magical thinking

There's waaaay too much of it going on here. Mini-scandal XYZ is Going To Bring Them Down.... It's fantasy and denial and escapism.

Back to the reality-based community thing: ethics 'problems' bring down politicians only when they have served all the purposes their electorate needed them for. Rostenkowski and all those conservative Democrats died politically with their electorate over the House Bank scandal because their constituents had no more real use for them. Clinton survived the Lewinsky affair, despite prevarications, because he still had purposes left to fulfill that The People valued.

The political importance of the Plame affair is not in anyone getting fired or whatever. The importance of it lies in smashing one of Republican groupthink's last unbroken ideological dogmas: that their leaders are fundamentally ethical. They no longer believe that about Congress or the Courts, but they've been able to rationalize it with that the White House is some haven of Virtue.

On a battlefield you have to defeat all units the enemy has. In a war you have to destroy or overwhelm all their armies. That's what Democrats' business is in the present- wearing down all the elements of Republican strength in a comprehensive way. Republicans have had the full weight of The Way We've Always Done Things and What We've Always Believed behind them and to exploit. There is no magic to what Democrats can and must do- just keep up the fire and make it as deadly as possible until the power of the Rebellion is broken in the hearts and minds of its supporters, the leaders are crushed and the militant activists bled out.

The point of the Schiavo affair, the Plame affair, and the 'Downing Street' memo brouhaha is the shattering of the righteous/Messianic ideology of the Right in 'morality', domestic affairs, and foreign affairs, respectively. After these have hit home the common ideological ground of Republicans disintegrates. The political meaning of it is that moderate Republicans no longer have anything in common with the regressive hardliners, and all the incentives and wedges are such that they break away. This is why the response of the White House is as extreme as it is- they don't care whether Rove works from within the West Wing or from some other office building, they do abyssmally fear loss of control and defection of a 10 million voter bloc, plus the way swing voters will interpret that.
