The right wingers probably fear Clark more than all the other candidates because if he gets big momentum and a lot of national exposure he will beat Bush. He probably has the most potential overall, on a purely image and symbolic level, to appeal to their voters. Imagine, purely on an image level, Clark appearing on the same stage with shrub. Without even considering the merits or Bush's abysmal record. Clark is tall, imposing, handsome, articulate and confident. He has an "All-American" resume including honorable military service. Shrub is smaller, cretinous, simian and smirking and on any close inspection is a silver spoon privileged mama's boy frat animal with a military record that is questionable at best. They DON'T WANT THIS!
There has been a fierce concerted campaign to paint Clark as the creation/puppet of the Clintons from the very beginning, everyone from Rush to William Safire. They feel this will "taint" and discredit Clark. I think a lot of people around now are starting to remember that they were pretty well off during the Clinton years now...
