Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 11:51 PM by Sperk
Clinton????? Why were they able to "cut through the red tape" and provide effective and efficient relief?? This is nothing but a set up to dismantal gov't agencies. Bush and his cronies delayed and are still delaying ON PURPOSE. Grover Norquist must be creaming his jeans.

11. I was watching him, and Tweety asked if Guiliani would help down in N.O.
as someone to bring things together and organize them. He said we shouldn't need a Guiliani, as that's what Brown's job was supposed to be. He said that FEMA had the appearance of being more effective last year, not because of Brown, but because Jeb has more of an infrastructure in place to deal with such disasters. Louisiana, which gets hit less frequently, has no such infrastructure, hence FEMA's incompetence was laid bare this time.

He said someone like Jeb knew what to do. He said that the head of FEMA before Brown knew what to do. He pinned the problem mostly on Brown at the federal level. He didn't let local off the hook, but he had plenty of blame to go round.

What I don't know, because I can't remember the guy's name, is if the FEMA person before Brown was appointed by Bush or Clinton originally. Can someone tell me?

They imply strongly that FEMA was weakened by the restructuring.

Edit: It is clear to most that the problem is FEMA's impotence, which clearly highlights the importance of a strong Federal diaster response team. It is also clear that the locals could not have held up on their own.

I think we will see a renaissance of progressive politics. People realize the value of government when faced with a tragedy such as this, where government failure cost lives. People are identifying with the victims, realizing the same thing could happen to them in their town, and are not so willing to concede tax cuts to the rich given these costs.
