Bush, "Puffy-eyed, cranky, fidgety, rocking back and forth in his chair"
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9470154/site/newsweek/

Oct. 3, 2005 issue - This time, President Bush was not going to be caught out of position. He had flown to Colorado to the headquarters of Northern Command, the military nerve center for protecting the continental United States. "Northcom" is just across an air base from Cheyenne Mountain, where cold warriors had once watched for Soviet nuclear-missile attacks. A few hours after Hurricane Rita came ashore on the Texas-Louisiana border at dawn on Saturday, Bush sat in the Northcom Situation Room, looking at large flat screens filled with satellite images of the storm, graphics of troop deployments, and the faces of his commanders, including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

The president was hearing mostly good news. The storm, though strong, was not a Category 4 or 5 monster. The vast network of refineries and oil platforms seemed to mostly withstand the 120-mile-an-hour winds and 15-foot storm surge. It would take weeks to get the gulf oil industry fully back online, and fuel prices were sure to go up. But the storm did not appear to have wrecked the economy or claimed hundreds of lives.

The president didn't look all that relieved or happy, however. His eyes were puffy from lack of sleep (he had been awakened all through the night with bulletins), and he seemed cranky and fidgety. A group of reporters and photographers had been summoned by White House handlers to capture a photo op of the commander in chief at his post. Bush stared at them balefully. He rocked back and forth in his chair, furiously at times, asked no questions and took no notes. It almost seemed as though he resented having to strike a pose for the press.

58. Katrina vs 9/11 -- not to get too conspiratorial but
it is interesting to me that Katrina should show the WH to be totally unprepared and incompetent in general but somehow back in the days after 9/11 they were ready to spring into action with the PATRIOT ACT and creating the Homeland Security Dept and such within days...

98. thanks for catching my meaning
the truth is already out -- it just will remain in the grey zone forever. While many mainstream Americans will admit in private moments that they think something was not as it seemed on 9/11, any public speculation will be always be slammed, ridiculed, dismissed.

99. I actually think the truth WILL come out - the 9/11 Commission Report is
so full of blatant lies and suppression, and there are so many impossible "coincidences" and "miracles, it wouldn't even take a whistleblower.

In the small chance you haven't already seen/heard it, don't miss Griffin's historic Madison lecture on the lies of the 9/11 Commission report - I found it gripping and convincing, and I think others would begin asking questions too if they had not heard these things before. It's available in video and audio online, and you can also buy VHS or DVD from CSpan.

Here's a thread from May (and the Griffin lecture WAS re-aired):

13. "But we couldn't find the guy with the keys,"

.....No matter how much and how carefully governments plan, someone always fails to get the message. Thursday night, Harris County (Houston) officials were scrambling to tap stockpiles of gasoline for motorists and municipal vehicles. They managed to get a Shell Oil official to go to a refinery—but couldn't gain entry. "We had the truck. We were at the refinery. But we couldn't find the guy with the keys," lamented Judge Robert Eckels, the main county official who briefed reporters. .......

This is the most scary part of all!!

While I sat in a hotel room in Houston, with a little 9 year old boy asking very perceptive questions and I was furiously scribbling notes of things to do, what to take next time, cranky Dubya, the person who is suppose to ultimately be in charge of the whole enchilada, is sitting in his bunker, evidently disengaged.

15. "handlers last week went to great lengths to erase the image..of fiddling"

......Having raised expectations so high, it was probably inevitable that Bush would disappoint. Especially during the run-up to the Iraq war and the 2004 campaign, Bush was not above stirring up a little fear. Now he is trying, a little too hard, perhaps, to reassure the public that his government really is able to cope with chaos. Four years after 9/11, many Americans are still anxiously waiting for the next attack. Hurricane Katrina served as a frightening sneak preview, testing the government's reaction to catastrophe. Bush and his handlers last week went to great lengths to erase the image, left over from Katrina, of the president's fiddling (actually, pretending to play a guitar after a rally in San Diego) while New Orleans sank.

The president made no effort to play down hurricanes as natural calamities that are unavoidable and hence uncontrollable. Instead, he reinforced the link between hurricanes and terrorism, suggesting that Osama bin Laden must have been pleased with the havoc wreaked by Katrina. When Rita threatened, Bush took personal control of the disaster preparations. He was so deep in the details that he supervised, via videoconference from his Northcom command post, the evacuation of a single hospital in Beaumont, Texas, to make sure the Feds and the state were taking the right steps and talking to each other. When his briefers reported that local governments were being faxed legal waivers to expedite the cleanup, the president helpfully pointed out that many local officials still don't have working fax machines. (Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff assured him that his people were making follow-up phone calls.)

It is probably not realistic to expect government to rise above human frailty in a crisis. The press holds Bush to a shifting standard: he was badgered by reporters for not going right to the scene of the disaster after Katrina, then criticized for "getting in the way" when he wanted to go to Texas before Rita. Bush canceled the pre-Rita trip, and he was probably right about not wanting to rush to the scene afterward. On Saturday afternoon, as reporters and advance men in Bush's entourage squeezed into the Texas emergency-ops center, a worker handling requests for generators cried out, "Whose idea was this? I can't do my work! I am about to really lose it!" Last week long lines of passengers trying to flee Houston snaked out of George H.W. Bush airport because about half the federal security screeners had failed to show up for work. Presumably, they were on the road like everyone else...........

17. Bush self-destructing?
As depressed as I was the day after the election, there were those who said the village idiot could never hold it together for another four years. Is he going down in flames, friends? Over three years to go and everything is a big fat mess. He WILL go down as the dumbest, most incompetent, corrupt president in American history. No doubt. It is just so very sad so many good people have to die for his grossly overblown ego.

78. I have read much testimony here today that what he actually has... is
a hangover. People posting here who have experience living with alcholics say they recognize this same look. Wouldn't surprise me, in light of what the National Enquirer (online, at least) brought up a few days back.

So, sitting there visibly rudderless, passive as can be, not asking any questions, not taking any notes, looking "balefully" at the photographers surrounding him to get a shot (when he probably is wishing he had one ready to drink, then and there), sitting there all "cranky and fidgety" doesn't sound to me like he's this suddenly reborn, fully-engaged, and emotionally overwrought over the plight of the hurricane victims, as has been spun, even in that Enquirer story. HAH. What he's thinking when he's sitting there, according to the baggy-eyed, pinch-mouthed picture of him that I've seen around the net, is most likely "WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH, I'm BORED. Can I leave now? I think I need a bathroom break. Do I HAVE to stay for this? Can't I go home? Are we done yet? Condi? Turdblossom? Can you get me outta here? man... i needadrink..."

37. It's an interesting (and frightening) question
I think Bush is almost uniquely mentally unprepared to be in his current position: a pResident who is unpopular with both the people AND the press. Add in his potential legal troubles (Plamegate), the burden of responsibility for the disastrous serious of fuckups over which he's presided (to the extent that he's capable of feeling such a thing), and the fact that he's apparently back on the sauce, and you have a rapidly aging and deteriorating W.

51. It is the most important question of the day.
This is a man who was mentally ill when elected,
but well defended psychologically speaking. His limited
inner resources were well protected. Now the defenses and
protection are being stripped away. He is quite vulnerable to rapid
and serious decompensation, especially if he is boozing again. Also of great concern is that his minders seem to be distracted, preoccupied, and ill. Rove, Cheney, Rummy, et al. Psychs have been sounding the alarm bell for some time now.

89. Watch this VIDEO comparing Bush's speaking 10 years ago and today
10 years ago he was smooth and confident, even speaking WITHOUT NOTES. These days he can hardly form a coherent sentence. Some mental health professionals who have looked at the comparison of then vs now suggest Bush may have presenile dementia, which is progressive and incurable.

Just not clear what we are looking at specifically.
Dementia can be caused by a number of factors. I think
in *'s case, there is a lot going on in terms of pathology.

91. "A lot going on in terms of pathology" - yes, I agree. We can't be more
specific than that without an actual diagnostic study - which would never be made public as long as they need their puppet - but that there is some kind of profoundly debilitating and apparently progressive pathology is clear.

That it is affecting his mental and speech functions is clear. Is it also making him paranoid, super-irritable, bringing other ugly and potentially dangerous (for the country) personality changes? That happens with many dementias - we can only guess and worry without a real diagnosis.

Personality disorder(s). Chemical abuse/addiction.
Possible Pi Polar as well?

If you look at how he holds his neck and arms it looks like
some sort of lack of blood flow to the brain?

I think it is hard to sort out what is what, he has such
a complex psych picture.

Yes I think it does not bode well. His history is that he
is mean, petty, revengeful, impulsive, over reactive.
As his environment gets more hostile I think he will get uglier than usual.

Either he's going to blow chunks, and he's stifling the urge; has to pee, and Condi isn't there; or the speed he took to take the edge off the boozing the night before kicked in with a vengence...

He's such a sack of wasted cells... How can he still be the leader of the free world? Someone remind me... I cannot fathom it...

93. OF COURSE THERE IS A NATIONAL PLAN!!! It is a DHS document and
Edited on Tue Sep-27-05 05:45 AM by Nothing Without Hope
it very clearly gives full authority to Bush and to Chertoff to do whatever is needed in an emergency. Authority that they did NOT invoke for DAYS as people died. Chertoff didn't even designate the Katrina a "national incident" for DAYS. The responsibility is clear.

And the national response plan exists already. It's called, cryptically :sarcasm: "The National Response Plan."

Here is the NRP itself:
http://www.dhs.gov/interweb/assetlibrary/NRP_FullText.pdf

Here is a thread on the NRP:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4668155
Thread title: The Buck Stops Here: NATIONAL RESPONSE PLAN

Here is how Chertoff delayed declaring a "national incident" after Katrina - and thus starting the federal response - for DAYS:
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001136746

And here is the actual memo that PROVES Chertoff delayed in this way, a true smoking gun:
http://www.realcities.com/multimedia/nationalchannel/news/KRT_Packages/archive/katrina/memo_to_cabinet_members.pdf

Finally, here is a post with links to the August 27 letter and August 28 clarification from Blanco to Bush/DHS asking for declaration of state of emergency and the Aug 27 response from Bush:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2064469&mesg_id=2067532

The truth is very easy to find, but they keep on lying. Amazing, to pretend that there is no National Response Plan and that the delays and blocks of aid were the fault of the state and local officials.

This is a power grab for martial law, that's very clear. I urge you to read ALL of this thread, including the replies, to see just how very, very clear this truly is:

45. He shouldn't look happy
If people are awake, they will realize the real meaning of Rita.

"Their performance this week shows clearly that they could have done the job three weeks ago. They just didn't.

"It doesn't show that we are safer, that the government is not actually the bungle mess we thought. It shows that it is able to do its job if Bush decides that it's important to him that you be taken care of. Once they get their poll numbers back in safe territory, they can go back to being choosy. 'Who knew an earthquake would be so devastating. We thought the state and local groups had evacuation plans. This was an ultra-earthquake!'

"Far from vindicating Bush or showing the feds on the mend. Rita just revealed that your safety is dependent on the whim and favor of George Bush. Move to Texas, Bucko."

All the Rita aftermath will do is remind people of what SHOULD have been done immediately after Katrina. And I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there were some, especially those who weathered the worst in New Orleans, who might be thinking "gee, he sure can get it up for Texas now, can't he?"

Not a bit surprised. If I'd gone through that, it's precisely what I'd be thinking... and then SCREAMING about.

59. Smirk doesn't give a rat's behind about hurricane response...
he doesn't care about the issues that we do.

What he does care about is that all this is taking valuable time from his main agenda. Every day he has to pretend he cares about national security, is another day he and his cronies are not able to further rape American citizens with Social Security "reform", further tax breaks for those needy multi-millionaires, spreading "democracy" to oil-rich nations through violence, obliteration of the Constitution, etc...

That is the real reason he is drinking, not again, as I believe he never stopped, but drinking more. Bottoms up, Chimpie; pour yourself another. It's only a matter of time before even your staunchest supporters will begin to question their loyalty to you, even if not publicly.

:nuke: You're done. :nuke:

Until now, he's been able to divert blame and depend on the complicity of the MSM. The problem is, there was no way to spin his response Katrina--not even Fox News could do it and maintain any sort of credibility. Rita is in HIS lap, he's clearly not calling the shots, and he's clearly terrified that people are going to notice.

All he needs is the metal balls to click to calm his nerves. "Who took those strawberries..."

Actually, I think he is pissed because Rita didn't do more damage than Katrina and give him a chance to redeem himself with a more golden bullhorn moment. His little CENTCOM drama was all for naught.

I do think he is on the verge of becoming completely unglued and I hope, pray that when it happens, it will be live on TV in front of every Merkin woman, man and child.

Laura warned us about his crankiness and temper during the campaign. (I read it in the Chicago Sun-Times.) She would often have to scold him with a "Now, Bushie!"

remember this scene for what it is - a shameless photo-op in which Bush knew nothing, did nothing, was totally superfluous and uncaring. He had been told to be there for appearances and he hated actually having to leave his comfy bed to do it. That's what flunkies are for.

Let them remember this:

He rocked back and forth in his chair, furiously at times, asked no questions and took no notes. It almost seemed as though he resented having to strike a pose for the press.
