"Gov't can't run Amtrak but gov't can run the Middle East."
Question/comment just now from George Will on This Week on ABC. He also mentioned that the U.S. is engaged in nation building in the Middle East.

"Conservatism doesn't look to create challenges" (paraphrasing George Will's comment about the "Bush Doctrine" to spread democracy throughout the world.

BTW, a bit of a reminder:

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2004/03/02/once_against_nation_building_bush_now_involved/

During a debate with then-Vice President Al Gore on Oct. 11, 2000, in Winston-Salem, N.C., Bush said: "I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building. . . . I think what we need to do is convince people who live in the lands they live in to build the nations. Maybe I'm missing something here. I mean, we're going to have a kind of nation-building corps from America? Absolutely not."

1. Iraq and Afghanistan are not about nation building...
They are about building bases and controlling the flow of oil and natural gas.

The "democracy" stuff is just window dressing designed to appeal to the infantile fantasists who long for comforting bedtime stories.

2. Great observation by Will. But I still hate him.
If the occupation was going great, he would be full onboard.

I suppose he's tickled with the small government response to Katrina.

About time he noticed the corporate cabal is not about "conservatism."

3. The govt could run Amtrak if it was given the funding and legislation
every other govt-run train system is given in other countries.

Amtrak is a mess because of social policy, not because there is something inherently wrong with the govt running a utility.

4. Gov't can't even run FEMA well enough to rescue New Orleans
but they think they can rescue Iraq? Maybe that's why Iraq's now building yet another new Islamic government?

7. Iraq under Hussein was not an Islamic govt.
Although no rightwingnuts know this, Hussein was secular.

NOW Iraq will have an Islamic government.

Thank BUSH. HE DID IT.

I'm very well aware of the fact that, thanks to George Bush, Iraqi women have lost their rights.
