Poll question: Who will the Republican Nominee in '08 be?
I know it's early... it's a "just for fun", like if it were a football pool or whatever.

The other question is: will an actual competitive primary be allowed, or will party machinery "anoint" the candidate like shrubya himself?

1. I don't think it'll be any of them. I suspect Allen, maybe.
I think all the people on your list will try, and I'm going to enjoy they taking pot shots at each other!

Frist is killing himself NOW with the scandal over insider trading.
Rudy is just too liberal on his social policies for the Pubs to accept.

McCain had a real shot in 2000, but Shrub screwed that for him, and how too many Pubs hate him as much as we hate Liberman.

It's too soon to think Jeb. After 8 years, the Country is tired of the name Bush! Americans don't want a dynasty or a royal family!

21. Charlie Cook
agrees with you. I think that they'll end up running McCain because he can beat Hillary. With Hillary on the Dem. ticket, they don't need to run a hardcore righty to get their base out. That is why the republicans have joined the Clinton media machine to push Hillary. It allows them to run a moderate.

3. All the religious yahoos that they would like to run are damaged goods
via scandal and corruption.

They will never run McCain or Rudy because those are two, as much as they are not liked here at DU, they are two that do not fit the sort to obey the PNAC and bow to their version of Fristianity.

One of them also happens to be an eye-talian cat-lik the other is an Irish-cat-lik.

In the view of most Republicans the groups these two belong to must be burned at the stake for worshipping false gods........and drinking the blood of real Christian babies.

6. Of Those Listed,
Giuliani has to have the edge, although his personal would dog him through the primaries and general.

McCain might be the best candidate, but he will never, ever get the nod any more than Lieberman or Zell Miller would get the Democratic nomination.

16. Good link catchawave
I think McCain has the overwhelming advantage, but of the list, I'd think Haley Barbour has the potential to rise to a serious contendor.

Those who I think are out for sure include Frist, Newt, Guiliani and Jeb.

I only hope that's not allowed again in THIS party. The last one was a disaster.

12. Only McCain stands a chance
The rest will be tied to the current leadership and it's approval ratings, but McCain is seen as enough of an outsider, and people like him. I think if he was the republican nominee he would be tough to beat.

That is assuming that the elections aren't totally rigged and bogus now.

23. I've always believed it would be Jeb
He simply makes the most sense, from an electoral standpoint. You lock up Florida and the Democratic nominee has almost zero margin for error. We would have to take Pennsylvania, along with either Ohio or Virginia. Otherwise, the straight flush of smaller states and that is not going to happen.

Jeb may seem like damaged goods via association now, but I'm not buying it. The Florida state economy has been much better than the national economy for several years and Jeb's approval numbers have been high. He was always considered more competent than GW and would have been the GOP nominee in 2000 if not for the Lawton Chiles upset in the Florida gov race in 1994.

George Allen also sounds logical, since it takes Virginia out of play, unless we nominate Warner. Actually, it virtually prevents us from nominating Warner.
