Bush's pathetic record on establishing national parks
According to the Sacramento Bee, Bush has set up exactly two parks: Flight 93 National Historical Park in Pennsylvania and Cedar Creek Civil War Battlefield in Virginia. And the battlefield is actually closed to the public most of the time, so it hardly counts.

By comparison, here's how many nationals parksd have been established by other recent presidents:

Bill Clinton -- 28
George H.W. Bush -- 16
Ronald Reagan -- 20
Jimmy Carter -- 48

1. Disgusting, even more so since Reagan established 20 parks
and Bush's own father established 16 in a single term. In fact, I'm half-surprised Bush doesn't have a negative rating on the national parks, considering that he's opened so many of them to roads and logging that he's done grave damage to the system.

Even more sickening when we recall that it was a Republican-- Teddy Roosevelt-- who est'd the Nat'l Parks in the first place. Yet Bush has never met a tree or a park that he didn't want to raze or pollute. I despise this President more with every detail that emerges.

3. this is actually a good thing....
first of all, for those who didn't know: National Parks are designated by Congress, not the President. Presidents can create National Monuments by executive order but not National Parks. That is actually the difference between NPs and NM's if you've ever wondered.

Second of all, the National Park Service's appropriations from Congress are not tied to how many parks they are or are not operating from year to year and how many staff they have, etc. There was some very real concerns about how Clinton named all these monuments and such but GOP Congress wouldn't increase funding at all so the service just had to try and staff more parks and maintain facilities and such with the same or even less amount of money. SO with Bush's anti-public sector agenda when it comes to budget cuts, it is actually good Bush hasn't gone and cut the ribbons on a bunch of new parks only to starve the service even more by forcing them to care for more parks.

the park service is in bad shape, leaving it vulnerable to privatization schemes and corporate "sponsorship" schemes.

5. And of violating the wilderness, roadless status of parks and
wilderness.

One thing most Americans agree on is preserving the environment.

I try to not think about it cause *'s policy has been so terrible.

:spank:
