Kerry Responds to Bush Attacks: text and audio file.
Text http://www.kerry.senate.gov/v3/cfm/record.cfm?id=248761

Below are Senator Kerry’s remarks, as prepared:

“Mr. President, Veterans Day is sacred - or it is supposed to be. Veterans Day is a day to honor veterans, not to play attack politics. The President, who is Commander in Chief, should know and respect this.

“Veterans Day originally marked the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, when the guns of World War I, the war to end all wars, finally fell silent. Instead of honoring that moment, instead of laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, instead of laying out a clear plan for success in Iraq, the President laid into his critics with an 11th hour rhetorical assault that dishonored America’s veterans and those serving today, even as he continued to distort the truth about his war of choice.

4. Woohoo!
Finally... sometimes words alone don't have the same power as hearing the emotion behind them.

6. After listening, I'm thinking: This speech should be on every newscast...
Edited on Tue Nov-15-05 11:56 AM by Brotherjohn
... this evening.

Of course, it won't be. But it should be.

What a wonderfully articulate, and truthful, response to Bush's own pathetic attempt at "revisionism".

Maybe (hopefully) Olbermann will play parts of it.

9. I think they did play part of it.
Speech was delivered yesterday in the Senate (there were several threads). But nobody can post tape of cspan video (because of legal threat) so we had to wait until it was posted elsewhere.

Anyway I saw on one of the other threads that KO did have part of it, also I heard a brief excerpt on NPR news last night, and just that little excerpt was kick ass!!

11. Did any of the major networks play any of it? Olbermann is something...
... b/c he's on in Prime Time on one of the "news" channels.

But to make a real mark on the populace as a whole, these kinds of words need to be on the air in a bigger way. They need to become a part of "water-cooler" dialogue.

On the other hand (not to get complacent), the fact that 3/5 of the nation believe Bush DELIBERATELY misled us into this war says that most ARE listening.

14. I think it was on NBC Nightly news (Monday)
I didn't get a chance to listen but someone posted on another thread that it was.

You should be able to replay Monday's broadcast here, if you're interested:

20. yes it was--that was me
They had a clip of a sentence or two on the NBC Nightly news.
Also, on CNN this morning I saw that they had put up a quote with pic of Kerry as an answer to * in his last public statement (Alaska?)
This was the quote from the speech: "The war in Iraq was and remains one of the great acts of misleading and deception in American history."

23. Okay. That's a better quote from Kerry at least!
Like someone here posted yesterday, maybe it's best to just keep repeating: "The president lied. There were no WMDs."

Ad infinitum. No other responses. No arguments. Just:
"The president lied. There were no WMDs."

Eventually, it will sink in.

I actually think it may be sinking in. Anyone but the hardcore 30% are abandoning him. 57% now think they were "intentionally misled" (NBC/WSJ poll, linked in one of my posts here) That's pretty strong stuff. While I think it'll be hard for him to lose his core 30%, I think the rest are moving more and more into the "vehemently opposed" group.

21. Thanks for the link. Jeez, Andrea Mitchell! It comes off like the Dems...
Edited on Tue Nov-15-05 02:42 PM by Brotherjohn
... are under investigation or something!

A little quote from Kerry saying "at worst" they trusted the president. Those were hardly his most forceful words! He made a very specific case for how the president misled us, using several examples. Of course, no hint of that in the report (even though it pretended to be a "Reality Check" on Bush's words).

Instead we got quotes from Andrea like "What did the Democrats know and when did they know it?" and "Did Congress do all IT could to uncover the truth?"

The entire issue of whether the Bush administration misled regarding WMDs is summed up like this:
1) Congress saw the CIA report claiming that Saddam was trying to reconstitute nukes, but the State Dept. dissent was buried on p 85.
2) The Kerry quote about trusting the prez.
3) Parroting the Bush claim, expressed as her reporting (without "checking" any facts), that Clinton and other intelligence agencies "saw intelligence, and thought Saddam Hussein had WMDs."

That's it.

It comes off like just more WH spin. Just as I feared, the average viewer will end up thinking "yeah, but the intelligence was bad. EVERYONE thought...". :puke:

By questioning their patriotism, he added insult to injury.

29. I am absolutely giddy with joy...
...when new polls come out. It's a great time to be a Democrat! It's just too bad it took all this demolition and ruin for America to wake up, but thank God it finally is!
Now, who are we going to send in there to lead the country in 2008?

7. Why is Kerry calling Bush president?
Why are Boxer, Dean and so many other democrats calling Bush president? They(and others) know the election was stolen, so why do they call Bush president?

This has been bothering me for a long time. I know RW people who are always telling me "If they (meaning Kerry, Boxer, etc.) call Bush president than Bush must be president, right?"

All of these people who call Bush president are undermining all the work we've been doing for the past 5 years to get the truth out to everyone. Am I the only one bothered by this?

And many of the articles, web pages, etc posted here also refer to Bush as president. I think DU should make a new rule. "No article, web page, no nothing that refers to Bush as president is allow on DU"

Sorry for the rant, but this is something I feel strongly about.

8. And with these words...
The real war, the war to end this administration... has begun. Finally.
Now we must push our advantage and take the power, that our representatives are justifying , of our outrage, and yell. We have been struggling hard these last few years, but now...NOW... is the real time to push. Write, call, leaflet, fax, and do what you can to push this final endgame home. I love you all my fellow patriots and I thank you in advance for the work ahead.

25. Thanks! This is one for the history books.
I recommended Kerry's speech at michaelmoore.com. This is without a doubt the strongest condemnation of Shrub's lies from any public figure to date. Kerry held nothing back. When I heard the Senator's speech, my thoughts were: Senator Kerry WATCH you back! "THEY" are not going to like this one bit.

If the national media isn't doing its job, then it is up to us to get this story out. Kerry literally rips Shrub a new one in this speech and the public should hear it. This speech, taken with the record of Senator Kerry's statements as compared to what Shrub has been saying since Veterans Day, PROVE that Shrub is lying. Put both statements side-by-side and it proves that Shrub is lying to us ... not back then, but now.

If we could only get this wacko in the oval office to repeat his lies under oath. (All I want for Christmas is impeachment.) No wonder they got him out of the country...fast.

over whether he misled a nation about an affair going to pretend it does not matter if the administration intentionally misled the country into war?"

One of my favorite lines in Kerry's speech.
