They believe that people are complete enough to make good decisions on their own, and to provide social services to assist if there are any weak spots.
They're not into telling others what to do, only that they are welcome to do it unless it interferes with another's freedom.
Individual religions provide social structures; Government should not impinge upon anyone's right to choose their own religious path, present one as an approved choice, or force one as a requirement.
People look to structure and expectation for direction and comfort, especially in the face of uncertainty and threat.
If the Republicans are gung-ho on less "big government", then why are they manipulating this from both ends? Invoking fear and uncertainty and then offering themselves as the answer... Sociobiology. Alpha male nonsense. Witch doctors shaking the medicine stick, glass makers throwing stones and leaving their business cards.
Democrats give people enough credit to seek their individual way, much less to insult them by telling them that their free will is misguided, or their religious choice (or much more importantly, heritage) is wrong, especially from a position of supposed authority.
Republicans divide and conquer, instead of giving an ounce of credit to the American people, and the freedom the country was founded upon. Democrats take these things as so given, so essential to the country and its core principles, that they don't even need to talk about it. It's a given.
Republicans prosper from preventing it, from weakening it. And through this, weakening the concept of the two-party system itself.
