Former Charger enters 50th District field

By: MARK WALKER - Staff Writer
North (San Diego) County Times

SOLANA BEACH ---- A former National Football League defensive back and punt returner has entered the GOP sweepstakes to fill out the unexpired term of Randy "Duke" Cunningham.

Scott Turner, 33, a political neophyte, made his announcement Tuesday from a makeshift lectern placed on the 50-yard line at Santa Fe Christian School's Beauchamp Stadium.

Flanked by his wife, Robin, Turner said he's in the 50th Congressional District race despite naysayers who, he said, have told him he needs a Hail Mary-type completion to overcome his better-financed and more experienced rivals.

(snip)"

Turner's political resume is bare except for a 2004 volunteer internship in the district and Capitol Hill offices of U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, an experience the Dallas native said taught him the basics of congressional service. He cited a strong defense, secure borders and education as his three most important concerns, adding he would restore integrity to a seat now tarnished by Cunningham's Nov. 28 guilty pleas to bribery and tax evasion.

2. At least Steve Largent had decent stats
to name just one of many jocks-turned-repuke sock puppets. Why are there so many of them? Rumor has it that Lynn Swann is considering a run for office in Pa. as -- you guessed it -- a repuke. I think he should title his platform "The Immaculate Deception". :-)

4. That Was Franco
The Steeler on the receiving end of the "Immaculate Reception" was Franco Harris, not Lynn Swann. I grew up in Pittsburgh during the 70's. I've seen that play on repeats a million times.

5. Of course it was Franco -- but he's a good Dem!
I watched the game on TV, for Pete's sake. I've heard, here I think, that Franco is a good solid Dem who would never have to run on "The Immaculate Deception"! I just thought it would be a cool moniker to hang on the platform of a member of that great Steeler team who later went over to the repuke dark side.

6. The Republicans sure do like their celebrities
They'd vote for the devil if he ran as a Republican.

8. Whaddya mean "if"?
Which party would Satan prefer, anyway? The one that evinces concern for the least of these our brothers or the party that would just as soon wipe out two-thirds of humanity as look at them?

7. Sports and religion: a marriage made in hell
Great. Just what the world needs. It's bad enough to have actors and personalities think they can run our lives, but this is just tiresome.

Having lived in that district for awhile and knowing the other backwoods fascists there, he'd be a great fit. Sadly, though, for one who trades on his manliness, he was part of a team that's never amounted to anything. Even as a devoutly non-sports person, I know this.

Maybe he'll soak off votes here and there. Who knows?

San Diego is one of the most influential and least known metropolises in the country. It's the land that brought us Pete Wilson. IT'S THE 7TH LARGEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY.
