14. Likely a lot higher...
Since Iran - not having invaded any other country prior to being nuked - would surely do everything in their (remaining) power to disrupt the worldwide oil market... (i.g. buh-bye Saudi and UAE oil docks(?))

Like $45/gallon (+?)...

people want another war, when we cannot even win this one...and how much money shall we take away from our schools, health care,etc..anyone who would rally around this a hole would have to be crazy..he has done nothing right why would we rally around a loser..if this were to happen it will completely bankrupt this country(if we are not already.)

20. I agree with you --
especially when all the recent information about how bushie lies about absolutely everything.

I also don't believe that all the other major players will support bushie -- if they are still sane and not being blackmailed into subservience.

Bushie until recently has been able to equate "support the troops" with support bush -- but I believe that link has been broken as more stories about how Iraq invasion vets are being short shafted by the bushie crime gang.

41. His approval will briefly spike to a whoppin 40%...
... with the other 60% strongly in favor of impeachment. That approval level will rapidly go south within a few days after gas spikes, then becomes scarce, leveling off at 7%, right after Joe Lieberman takes to the airwaves to admonish people to support the CiC in a time of war.

I'm sure that the international community will come to our rescue, though. At least with enough jet fuel to fly him to the Hague.

If he does it, there is a share of blame that falls on those who knew better about Iraq but stayed silent, afraid of being called unpatriotic or unsupportive of the President. Their (in)actions have emboldened Bush. I'm lookin' at you Kerry.

15. Here is the problem...
Apocalypse What? (165 comments )
READ MORE: Iraq, 2006, George W. Bush

Did you catch Bush's evangelical-deer-caught-in-the-political-headlights moment Monday?

It came during the Q & A session following his speech on Iraq. The first question came from a woman who asked: " makes the point that members of your administration have reached out to prophetic Christians who see the war in Iraq and the rise of terrorism as signs of the apocalypse.

Do you believe this, that the war in Iraq and the rise of terrorism are signs of the apocalypse? And if not, why not?"

The president was clearly taken aback. He reacted as if he'd just seen a burning bush -- or had just been asked a really hard math question.

First he hemmed. Then he hawed. Then he hemmed some more.

"Um... uh... I... The answer is, I haven't really thought of it that way," he finally spit out. "Here's how I think of it. The first I've heard of that, by the way. I guess I'm more of a practical fellow." He then abruptly Left Behind the question at hand and went off on a long, standard-issue answer about 9/11 and fighting terrorists over there so we don't have to fight them over here.

40. I do not believe the President. It is what his base thinks and
if they think what they think he is, they will vote for him. I know that sounds like I am 'Bushspeaking' but it is really what we think some one is telling us that turns out to be what people vote for. Take Clinton and NAFTA. He said he would look into it before He signed it when he ran. I thought that meant he would not sign it as it was. Most Dem. as I recall wanted some changes in it but look what we got. All that run do this, so it is hard to really tell what they will do, so it ends up what we think they will do. I think Bush's base believe he will do as they wish so they will stick to him.

9. I don't think that's necessarily going to be the case
First of all, in past military actions bush had a lot more credibility and popularity that he doesn't have now. Americans don't trust him on national security anymore. There might be a slight uptick in the numbers, but I also feel like this will be counteracted by the factors above and the general discontent in this country for his administration.

10. They might for a day or two. But then the people will remember
that the military is stretched tight already, the economy and safety net are full of holes because Helliburtin needed all that money to do nothing in Iraq, and the national debt is out of this world. They will also get a quick awakening when the world (esp. Russia and China) wade in on the side of the Irani.

Then also there is the fact that the pollution alone from a nuke will hurt the people in that area and not the least it will contribute to the climate change we are finally recognizing. Then his rating will hit rock bottom - where all drunks need to go before they can get help.

Quite the opposite as America, as a whole, is very tired of the Iraq war. Also, there is no way, IMHO, that Bush's credibility will rebound enough to cause a majority to believe that war with Iran was in our best interests.

the heavy majority of this country is full up with their lying, dissembling, doubletalk bullshit.

the only thing to turn that around is honest talk followed by honest action, putting their money where their big talk is, aint gonna happen.

iran will be seen as a huge tragic blunder on top of other huge tragic blunders as it happens.

24. his ratings will plummet further, the guy has been lying for ...
six years straight and had been tripping over his own lies and telling new ones to cover up the old ones. The USA as a whole has begun to wake up to that, 70%+ think he is leading the country in the wrong direction.

Any bombing of Iran would be an act of war. That would not solve any problems and would only make matters worse. What little international support Bush has (only God knows if he has any left) would evaporate. There could be no ground war, there aren't enough resources.

Remember these are the same PNAC military geniuses that said the war in Iraq would be a cake walk, it would pay for itself within months and we'd all be home by Xmas if the Democrats haven't abolished it by then.

27. The Bush White House is an unimaginative and spiteful bunch, and
Edited on Sat Apr-08-06 06:23 PM by Old Crusoe
so strikes on Iran are frighteningly plausible.

But even if it happens, and even if there is a polljack for the president, my own personal thought is that it will only be temporary. It won't take very long for the rest of the Middle East to realize that this is the Crusades after all, wrought large and with ultra-West greed as its engine. Recruiting for al Qaeda should be a snap, and Bush will have bit into way too big a sandwich, and he'll choke on it.

U.S. voters aren't going to buy another assault, I don't think. At least not in the unquestioning numbers they bought the post-9-11 war. Bush also faces considerable resistance in the Senate. If he thinks he had trouble with Robert Byrd for Iraq, just wait until he strikes Iran without consulting Senators. And the U.N. might have just about had enough of Bush's Middle Eastern shenanigans.

It's tough to sustain a disastrous foreign policy by expanding the range of its ineffectiveness. Iran also has a stronger military presence than Saddam Hussein had, and for all we know, they are clear and plain on the imminent air strikes, and may decide to launch pre-emptive assaults of their own onto the Green Zone in Baghdad or missiles to Tel Aviv.

32. you're joking, right?
What part of "nukes" is so hard to understand?? This is not conventional warfare we're discussing here, and "ratings" would be beside the point altogether! When we start talking about his poll numbers going up we sound as stupid as they do!!! A nuclear halocaust is just that......we won't be sitting in front of our t.v.s passing the time peacefully viewing all the shock and awe. All hell would be breaking loose and approval ratings will be last thing on anyones' mind. I think I'm seeing a real disconnect from reality in more places than one these days. I expect it from the loons in the White House..but here?
Maybe we all need to read up on the meaning of "nuke"? When we start lobbing nukes at Iran does anyone rational think the rest of the world is going to just set back and do nothing????? Russia? China? North Korea? Think they'll just yawn and ignore it? If invading Iraq opened a Pandora's Box of horror...just wait and see what this grand old plan will unleash upon the earth. Ratings indeed.

submitted to cafferty files on cnn dated 04-04-06....

Jack,

I wish to send you something that I pray does not happen but if it does then you will have on record of this being sent to you and you can even use it for reference if things seem to be heating up more in Iran....So here it tis Jack...Iran was given 30 days to clear the nuke suspicions. If they do not and the banter between the U.S. and Iran continues, look for this administration to begin a pre med-term bombing raid. Bush is under the belief that he has some type of Messanic calling, and the right wing will try to proclaim this as "the end of days" as set out in Revelations...

Jack, If this happens, then I am afraid the Iranian and Iraqui Shiites will rise up as ONE..Could be the early beginnings of World WarIII..The bad thing will be our soldiers will be sitting ducks.....

Respectfully,

M.David Ben-B
