Democratic state Sen. Charlie Wilson scored a dominant primary victory Tuesday Ohio’s open 6th District, setting up a key November matchup with Republican state Rep. Chuck Blasdel — even though Wilson’s name did not appear on the ballot.
An energetic effort enabled Wilson to succeed with a write-in ballot campaign that erased an enormous gaffe he committed prior to the mid-February candidate filing deadline.
Wilson was recruited by Democratic officials as their choice to succeed veteran Democratic Rep. Ted Strickland, who is running for governor. But Wilson’s campaign failed to meet a meager signature requirement to qualify for the primary ballot.
Yet the same campaign that couldn’t locate 50 qualified voters in the southern Ohio district to sign Wilson’s petitions managed to persuade more than 34,000 voters to go to the polls and write in his name. His 63 percent put him well ahead of the two little-known Democrats who were listed on the ballot: Bob Carr (24 percent) and John S. Luchansky (13 percent).
