DeLay's Letter of Resignation from Raw Story

Congressman Tom DeLay
Representing the 22nd District of Texas

For Immediate Release

DeLay Notifies Speaker of June 9 Resignation Date

WASHINGTON - Congressman Tom DeLay (R-Sugar Land) today delivered the following letter to the Speaker of the House announcing his intention to resign his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives effective June 9, 2006. The text of the letter follows.

The Honorable J. Dennis Hastert
Speaker
U.S. House of Representatives
The Capitol Building
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Mr. Speaker:

It has been a great privilege, a high honor, and one of my most treasured personal pleasures to have served with you and our colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than twenty-one years. You have been a stellar example for our nation of personal courage and steadfast conviction, and I thank you for your leadership of this great institution as well as for your personal friendship.

As you are aware, I have recently made the decision to pursue new opportunities to engage in the important cultural and political battles of our day from an arena outside of the U.S. House of Representatives. As a result, I am informing you of my intention to formally resign as the representative of the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be effective at the close of business on June 9, 2006.

May God continue to bless you, the President, this great institution and its Members, and our nation.

Sincerely,

Tom DeLay
Member of Congress

2. Here's hoping those opportunities involve an orange jumpsuit.
Or even better, a long-term stay in a sanitorium.

Goodbye to the Hammer. You know, that's the same tool used to nail people to crosses....

Notice how he omits the actual reasons for his resignation? Even in defeat, these guys insist on lying.

I wonder if there is any such thing as a full Republican confession.

5. Bye Bye Bug Man!
"As you are aware, I have recently made the decision to pursue new opportunities to engage in the important cultural and political battles of our day from an arena outside of the U.S. House of Representatives."

He's making some high and mighty plans to rule the cell block???

RIGHT NOW is when we need someone to introduce legislation to the effect that any member of congress, government, whatever, who is under indictment, or has been found guilty of corruption can NEVER work in official capacity again, anywhere, in any branch of government or with any firm who does business with the government. PERIOD! Plus, they should also lose any retirement they are entitled to and forfeit their ill gotten gains as well.

7. Goes too far...
"Plus, they should also lose any retirement they are entitled to and forfeit their ill gotten gains as well."

Is not the punishment imposed by the court supposed to be appropriate for the crimes committed? Certainly any "ill-gotten gains" should be repossessed. However, the retirement issue seems excessive. For there will be examples of this new law of yours being misapplied or used as a weapon, and it denies what legimiate service they might have rendered.

10. does a court-martialed soldier get to keep HIS retirement?
why should our tax dollars pay for these crooked bastards for the rest of their lives when they have committed crimes in office!

Just my opinion, everyone is free to disagree

9. I think it has been
Except for the private industry part, the rest of that has been introduced. I'm fairly sure Kerry introduced it in the senate, and I think Louise Slaughter introduced it in the House.

What we need is for people to pay attention to what's introduced so they can advocate for it at the local level.

6. Notice....He "NEVER" mentioned his responsibility to his constituents
I was a constituent of that SOB and could not be happier that the SOB is gone. Only thing that would make me absolutely ecstatic is to see the SOB behind bars,"PRISON BARS" for the rest of his life.

8. YES!! Resign. Bush, Cheney, the whole cabal
That's one. Now let's get the rest of them to do the only right thing they've done in the last 6 years, and RESIGN.
