JIm Webb (VA Senate candidate) - did you know his son was going to Iraq?
He is being deployed there in the fall - I was unaware of this until I read Kerry's email just now.

I live in VA, and I don't recall this being made mention of in any prominent way, at least here in noVA.

Did I miss something, or perhaps was this deliberately kept low-key?

1. frankly, the amount that isn't known about webb is surprising
I voted for him in the primary, and I'll vote for him in the general. But as just one indication of how little about him seems to have been publicized, it wasn't until after I voted that I found out that he lives in the same subdivision that I live in.

2. Damn
This means, of course, that you or a close family member or associate HAVE to go to his house on Halloween dressed like George Allen. :)

4. Get on his mailing list and you'll learn a lot.
He is an author so his emails to supporters are actually interesting to read.

Here is the last part of the "thank you" email I got today:

"George Allen has already raised more than 11 million dollars, and intends to raise a great deal more. He has won two statewide races already. He has the power of incumbency on his side, and also the awesome power that comes with the backing of an incumbent President. We have, at the moment, not a lot of money, a candidate who has never run for office, and 2,500 rag-tag rebels who have volunteered for what many may think is a hopeless, quixotic journey.

I like those odds, actually. It'll make us all work a little harder. It fits with one of my favorite films, Cool Hand Luke -- one of the great lines in that movie: "Sometimes nothing is a pretty cool hand!"

Remember, folks: the Revolution started here...

Jim Webb"

3. It was low key.
It only came up when he mentioned that he was going to wear his sons combat boots throughout the campaign.

5. Webb spent very little money on the primary
IIRC he spend zero on tv ads, preferring to save cash for the race against Allen.

8. No TV ads...
He was on Hardball twice and on Colbert. A friend of mine asked him which he liked best and he said "Colbert, of course!"

10. It's a safe bet George Allen's teenage son
Forrest won't ever be sporting a military uniform. I hope to God someone asks Allen how all three of his children came to be named for heroes of the Confederacy. "Forrest" is an especially interesting choice given that Gen. Nathan Forrest was an early grand wizard of the KKK who committed atrocities against black union troops. A little wink-wink to the "base."

12. Two daughters - Brooke and Tyler
Walter Brooke was a member of the Confederate Congress and early proponent of designing a separate Confederate flag- Allen's beloved stars and bars. He also introduced a bill to move the capitol of the Confederacy to Richmond.

Robert Charles Tyler -last Confederate general slain in Civil War battle.

Interesting choices.

16. Maybe African Americans will come around to voting for Webb next time
around. This kind of information would surely galvanize them to vote against Allen. Combined with the information about Allen having a noose in his office, etc.

17. I hope Jim Webb gets a clue and gets the unvarnished truth
about Allen out there. When The New Republic ran a good, solid investigative piece about Allen last month the best Webb could come up was that it hit "below the belt." Like the repukes aren't going to try and drag Webb through the mud, throwing everything they can at him.

Between the noose, racist graffiti, Confederate sympathies going back to his days as a teenager in Southern California, sorry record on civil rights legislation, rubber stamping anything the chimp wants, naming his kid for a KKK grand wizard, touting "family values" while having his own messy divorce records sealed....there's plenty of fodder for Webb. I hope he fights fire with fire and takes no prisoners.

15. Well, George Allen can proudly and truthfully
state unequivocally that he'd never send his children to Iraq in order to win an election - or for any other reason.

18. I don't know why one would make it a big deal.
That would come off as political.
