A question about child abuse....
In many states (Washington for example....No the OTHER Washington) an individual is under a duty to disclose certain criminal actions to the police. Those provisions include mostly people like psychologists, shrinks, clergy & the like. Failure to do this could result in criminal prosecution.

Does anyone know if such laws exist in DC???

In other words if Hastert knew about the problem & did nothing can he go to jail???

1. I think those laws are commonplace, but from my experience
no "mandated reporter" ever gets in trouble for knowing, but not reporting.

4. Oh yes they do
There was a principal who lost his job and was charged with violating this law about 10 years ago for not reporting one of his teachers for abusing a kid.

I know there have been other cases too. We teachers are brought up to date on this law every couple years and we are always reminded of the educators who got in trouble for not reporting abuse and neglect.

15. Good to know it works somewhere. I'm just too disillusioned with what
I've seen, which is two cases where neglect and bizarre sexual behavior went on and NOBODY reported it, even thedirector of a daycare in one case. Just saw the final report and they are just getting slap on wrist for the event. And no penalty whatsoever for knowing and not reporting it. I think "they" make an example of someone once a decade and let the rest just slide. imo

2. It's a federal law
There was a thread here yesterday about this. The question is are US lawmakers mandated reporters? I honestly don't know. The law applies to people who work with kids. So i am doubting Hastert is a mandated reporter.

Still doesn't make his coverup okay though.

5. I searched but couldn't find it
It started just like yours, with a question about whether Hastert was mandated to report this. I don't remember what forum it was in. But I will keep looking.

7. aren't the pages and internees working for them
since they are underage; there should be protections in place.

11. I am going to have to defer this question to an attorney
I know I am a mandated reporter. So are social workers, doctors, nurses, and day care workers. I am not sure about Congressmen.

9. This should be the issue that Dems should push
<snip>
The question is are US lawmakers mandated reporters?
<snip>

The question should be are US lawmakers above the laws that they set and apply to American citizens? They are not above the law and that is what should be hammered home....if there was obstruction by the leadership of the GOP leadership they should be prosecuted....

12. That's not the question
It is - - > Are they mandated reporters under this law?

Like I said earlier, I honestly don't know.

10. So many laws that Congress makes do not apply to them
even if it is a law, they may have excluded themselves.

8. probably applies to whoever manages the pages and their schooling.

I suspect whoever gave the reported warnings will get chopped up. There's a lot of high-visibility CYA going on and shit rolls downhill. God help us if the program admin. is a Democrat.

14. Definitely applies to their teachers
And this kid's teacher has broken the law if he/she knew about this relationship with Foley but didn't report it. If the teacher didn't know, he/she is not in trouble.
