With adequate funding the number one killer of our post-modern
era could be conquered and extirpated. Cancer. Breast cancer.
Cancer of all kinds. But IBC (Inflamatory Breast Cancer) a new
and insidious killer is affecting and killing--because of the
speed at which it develops--young women. We must urge doctors
and insurance companies to change the coverage of
mammographies to include young women, and not just those over
forty years of age. What the Women's Cancer Research Fund and
many cancer charities are doing with their "Key to the
Cure" program this coming week is commendable.
These not-for profit corporations are teaming up with
profit corporations such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Mercedes-Benz
USA, and others, to raise funds for research. This symbiotic
relation between the Private sector and the "Third
Sector" (as David Rockefeller call it in his Memoirs)
needs to be buttressed by the Public sector--the Government.
While 300 billion dollars has already been spent to kill
people in Iraq, not a penny has gone into IBC research. Let's
change course: divert the money for cancer research and save
our young women now.
