HAMDEN -- There was no empty chair, like the one Stephen Colbert left for Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman on the set of "The Colbert Report" last summer, when Lieberman steadfastly refused to appear on his satirical news show....

All that WTIC-TV, Channel 61, could offer its viewers Thursday night was a live debate at Quinnipiac University between the U.S. Senate nominees of the two major parties, Democrat Ned Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger....

In his absence, Lamont and Schlesinger debated Iraq, the federal budget, the origins of terrorism, illegal immigration, the suffering in Darfur, affirmative action and other issues over 60 minutes.

"Alan, I'm happy to see that you're here," Lamont said. "In the interest of bipartisanship, we've got the Republican and Democratic nominee, reaching across the aisle. I wish that Sen. Lieberman was here as well to answer the questions of the people of Connecticut."

Ned's point was skillfully crafted. Joe's bull about "bipartisanship" was never anything more than his addiction to power, wanting it and wanting to be close to it.
