RIP PNAC
That was fast. Bill Kristol stumbles through his latest "Daily Show" interview, and now, it appears, PNAC is folding its tent.

This new American century will be anticlimactic, since its main project was accomplished so quickly:

Gary Schmitt used to be a senior figure at the "New American Century" project. Now he is director of strategic studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), and he says the project has come to a natural end.

"When the project started, it was not intended to go forever. That is why we are shutting it down. We would have had to spend too much time raising money for it and it has already done its job.

For a fascinating look at the history of the neo-cons and their operatic relationship with the Islamists, see here (video).

See also: Kristol bloviating about the "surge," which he argues should last at least as long as Bush does.

As Bill Maher said, "Hey, you know what, Nostradamus? Why don't you sit this one out?"

1. The label may be retired; the neocons aren't going anywhere.
Edited on Tue Dec-26-06 12:51 PM by sparosnare
The AEI, an organization created to put forth the ideals of PNAC, is still very much alive. Its 'scholars' are all neocons and I'd love to believe they've accepted defeat and will just go away. They're a bunch of weasels and will emerge in another form.

7. The AEI. How is this organization funded? Do they run NPR now?
Seems each time I tune in my NPR station, I'm hearing opinion from some "scholar" from the American Enterprise Institute.

the AEI and alter mouthpiece, NPR..

2. "Already done its job?"
Like getting us into a war based on a lie. Great Job. Getting untold thousands of human being killed for no reason. Way to go boys, heckuva job.

PNAC should go away because anyone remotely connected to it should be tried, found guilty and hanged until dead.

9. The perfect "Kristolization" of the anti-reality based PoV
Declaring "Mission Accomplished" for PNAC perfectly illustrates how divorced these guys are from reality.

Having gotten the U.S. to invade Iraq is "success" -- even though it's disastrous, immoral, and outrageously expensive -- because it means that these guys have successfully asserted their will over us and the rest of the world. That's all that matters, not the consequences of this shameful fiasco.

PNAC may be "dead", but the influences and signatories are still alive. Only when they are no longer in positions of influence will PNAC be "dead".

And they are certainly still around.

15. Mission accomplished!
This was the mission. A few thousand dead Americans and a few hundred thousand dead Iraqis isn't the sort of detail to bother the wreckers of all human achievement at PNAC. We'd be naive to iagine they ever wanted anything more than destruction for its own sake. They'll go on in some new guise, but as the same morally and intellectually bankrupt clique of shadowy cowards & bullies, glorifying war in place of any peaceful attempt at progress, like disgusting parasites on the diseased war machine that represents the summit of their aspirations.

27. and the letter to Fearless Leader on 9/20/2001
http://web.archive.org/web/20020601220201/www.newamericancentury.org/Bushletter.htm

September 20, 2001

The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States
Washington, DC

Dear Mr. President,

We write to endorse your admirable commitment to “lead the world to victory” in the war against terrorism. We fully support your call for “a broad and sustained campaign” against the “terrorist organizations and those who harbor and support them.” We agree with Secretary of State Powell that the United States must find and punish the perpetrators of the horrific attack of September 11, and we must, as he said, “go after terrorism wherever we find it in the world” and “get it by its branch and root.” We agree with the Secretary of State that U.S. policy must aim not only at finding the people responsible for this incident, but must also target those “other groups out there that mean us no good” and “that have conducted attacks previously against U.S. personnel, U.S. interests and our allies.”

In order to carry out this “first war of the 21st century” successfully, and in order, as you have said, to do future “generations a favor by coming together and whipping terrorism,” we believe the following steps are necessary parts of a comprehensive strategy.

Osama bin Laden

We agree that a key goal, but by no means the only goal, of the current war on terrorism should be to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, and to destroy his network of associates. To this end, we support the necessary military action in Afghanistan and the provision of substantial financial and military assistance to the anti-Taliban forces in that country.

Iraq

We agree with Secretary of State Powell’s recent statement that Saddam Hussein “is one of the leading terrorists on the face of the Earth….” It may be that the Iraqi government provided assistance in some form to the recent attack on the United States. But even if evidence does not link Iraq directly to the attack, any strategy aiming at the eradication of terrorism and its sponsors must include a determined effort to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq. Failure to undertake such an effort will constitute an early and perhaps decisive surrender in the war on international terrorism. The United States must therefore provide full military and financial support to the Iraqi opposition. American military force should be used to provide a “safe zone” in Iraq from which the opposition can operate. And American forces must be prepared to back up our commitment to the Iraqi opposition by all necessary means.

Hezbollah

Hezbollah is one of the leading terrorist organizations in the world. It is suspected of having been involved in the 1998 bombings of the American embassies in Africa, and implicated in the bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983. Hezbollah clearly falls in the category cited by Secretary Powell of groups “that mean us no good” and “that have conducted attacks previously against U.S. personnel, U.S. interests and our allies.” Therefore, any war against terrorism must target Hezbollah. We believe the administration should demand that Iran and Syria immediately cease all military, financial, and political support for Hezbollah and its operations. Should Iran and Syria refuse to comply, the administration should consider appropriate measures of retaliation against these known state sponsors of terrorism.

--snip--

Sincerely,

William Kristol

They can take their names off the site but the wayback machine tells all.
