Update: Specter Admits Role in Expanding WH Powers
By Paul Kiel - January 17, 2007, 3:33 PM
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) confirmed that as Judiciary Committee chairman last year he made a last-minute change to a bill that expanded the administration's power to install U.S. Attorneys without Senate approval.

Seizing upon the new authority granted by Congress last March, the White House has pushed out several U.S. Attorneys, and begun to replace them without the Senate's consent.

"I can confirm for you that yes, it was a Specter provision," a spokesperson for the senator wrote to me in an email earlier today, responding to repeated inquiries. Earlier we reported that Specter had been fingered for the last-minute change, made in a select Republicans-only meeting after the House and Senate had voted on earlier versions.

SOB! :grr:

1. Please go away, Arlen.
You've done plenty of damage in the last forty-five years.

Take a well-deserved break.

In hell, ya rat!

23. I agree...
I have some respect for him, and yet he blows what could be solid support from me if he didn't do such sleezy things like this... giving shrubco any additional secretive power is a huge mistake, he has to realize this...

2. Thanks again, Sen. Specter
Golly, this guy is just a gift that keeps on giving, isn't he? The toughest talk out of the Republican caucus time after time against the corrupt Bush administration, but the most reliable provider of congressional goodies to the crooks in the White House.

Don't listen to a word these liars say. Watch what they do, particularly when they think no one's looking. Specter's health may curtail his Senate career sooner rather than later, but Gordon Smith of Oregon seems prepared to assume the mantle of Master of Political Grandstanding.

12. this makes me thing
If you take the forced resignations of all the US attorney's we've heard about this week, plus this provision snuck in in the dead of night with only Republicans knowing about it, some much grander scheme must be out there.

They are planning something. It may be as simple as not allowing Republican corruption to be looked it, but something else could be on the horizon.

14. In my living at this very hour, ladies and gentlemen, are
visitors from solar systems well beyond this one.

They are courteus to a fault, if a bit odd looking by our human standards, and for purposes of ease of communication, they speak immaculate English.

They ask if perhaps I could provide them with an earthling whom they wish to take to their far-distant lands and subject to unspeakable experimentation involving excruciating pain.

Does anyone object if I give them Senator Specter's name?

24. Can anyone expect less of someone who was complicit in JFK's coverup?
Arlen Spector of course was the author of the famed "magic bullet" theory.

Take the time to look it up. So much of where we are today dates back to JFK and frankly years before that.

History is information is power.

in the cover-up is a lifetime Senate seat. His connection to the Bush Crime Family goes way back. He and his buddy Lieberman should have their foreskins reattached. They have broken their sacred covenant with god and are actively working for a satanic cult, the GOP.
Thank Zeus I'm a Democrat.

32. That bastard! "made in a select, Republicans-only meeting"
"Select, Republicans-only meeting". Remember that phrase, because it describes much of what the repukes did during their occupation of the majority position of congress.

It reminds me of the comment made by Patrick Leahy after the Edwards-Cheney VP debate. There was a dispute as to whether Cheney and Edwards had ever met before the debate. (They had; Cheney had maintained they hadn't.) Leahy pointed out that Cheney certainly wouldn't have met Edwards when Cheney visited Capitol Hill--because when Cheney came to Capitol Hill, he always spoke only to republican lawmakers, completely ignoring the democrats.

And they now want "bipartisnship". How dare they. How fucking dare they.
