Calling all Arizonans: McCain Recall effort filed yesterday!
This is the first I've heard of it and wanted to spread the news!!

"A new recall drive targets Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a top contender for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.

Organizers oppose McCain's continued support of the unpopular Iraq war and consider him complicit in what they perceive as the erosion of American civil liberties associated with the war on terror.

'For the most part, he's been all right, but he's supposed to be representing Arizona, and right now he seems to be just representing himself,' said William Crum, treasurer of Americans for Integrity and Justice, the Glendale-based recall committee. 'He's got tunnel-vision for the presidency.'

The recall application filed Tuesday with the Arizona Secretary of State's Office accuses McCain of 'shirking his duties as a senator from the great state of Arizona' and of having 'acquiesced in his role as a member of the legislative branch to strongly check the power of the chief executive, who has for all intents and purposes become a king.'

'Please, help restore our democracy, recall 'Bloody John McCain,' ' the handwritten application says..."

I can't yet find a website or other info on the group, but if I do I will post it.

2. WOW, just wow.
Great find, AZBlue. Can't stand the peckerhead. This would put a serious dent in his presidential aspirations, eh? Ha, ha.

8. Of course it was hidden on the bottom of the page on azcentral.com
That's the online version of The Arizona Republic(an) newspaper.

11. In the Obituaries perhaps?
That would be a fitting harbinger of his upcoming presidential campaign.

3. Jumped off the page at me!!! Kick, kickety, kick, kick, KICK!
I'm certainly skeptical about the odds of success (ice at the intersection of Central and Washington on an August Monday, let's say) but if it would make him run a bit scared--and a better than expected result might, it would be well worth it.

4. Interesting...generally Senators cannot be recalled...
Edited on Wed Feb-14-07 04:11 PM by SaveElmer
There is no constitutional provision for recalling federal officials other than the Pres, VP and judges..but apparently Arizona does have a recall law which McCain and other candidates have voluntarily agreed to abide by. So in essence, McCain would resign if the recall were successful(which I highly doubt btw)..

5. I just want him to realize there is no free ride anymore. The likelihood of success
is as I describe it above. But he's talked out of both sides of his mealy mouth for so long that a good scare might make him take notice.

That's as much as I hope for.

By the way, I'm planning to contact Shadegg (sad to say, my Rep) regarding the memo on the home page ASAP.

You in?

6. Yes, we are saved by his signing the voluntary pledge.
Don't know if it will work, would be great if it did, but even if it just puts a dent in this jerk's ambitions I'll be thrilled. It would finally show the country that even though he's been re-elected, it's not because we like him (it's because of a lack of opponents and GOP dirty tricks).

10. Zonies--this combined with the leaked Shadegg talking points memo
means it's time for an all-out grassroots embarassment campign against our wrongheaded DC contingent.

They have long felt that they were safe once elected in this state--let's show them it just isn't so.

They have our local media, but we have the net and the water cooler.

More info on the leaked Shadegg memo in the AZ forum plus contact info.

Make 'em SQUIRM.

Awesome! I don't know what the chances are for his actual recall, but it sure sends a message. Hope someone got his reaction when first told on tape. That would be priceless.

14. Need help from California?
I think we could get some fund raising together to get the ball on this really rolling forward and pull that rat bastard out of office. How long does the petition have and how soon after getting all the sigs needed would there be until the recall election? Hopefully before the primaries begin.

20. They need 381,696 signatures before June 13 to force a statewide vote.
Not sure when the election would be after that. Thanks for the offer of help!! I'll keep you posted once I've contacted the group and see what they need. I'm trying to get a hold of them today.

15. You can't recall members of Congress
You would have to have a constitutional amendment in order to allow that.

16. In some states you can
It's up to the individual states. In Michigan we can recall members of Congress. IIRC, Illinois Republicans toyed with the idea of recalling Durbin a couple years ago.

18. Yes and no. Not in the traditional sense, but McCain signed a voluntary pledge
that's on file with the Secretary of State's Office to leave office if defeated in a recall election.

24. I think it's far less about getting him out than it is about getting him uncomfortable.
McCain has felt safe his entire political life. He skated by being in the Keating Five and sold his ex-POW soul to support Gitmo torture.

The RRR W in this state has been too comfortable, too complacent, far too long. The times have changed--we defeated JD Hayworthless, for instance.

It's time to wake them up and a good showing on this petition would do the trick. Let's make the worm squirm.

32. Members of Congress are not subject to recall
Their terms are specified in the constitution and cannot be altered by the states. This is the same line of reasoning which has struck down term limit laws for members of Congress.

23. Don't think so.......
This case: US Term Limits v Thornton was decided by the USSC and ruled that states cannot make laws changing or setting the qualifications of members of Congress. Only US Constitution can do that.

but aside from being an almost impossible task (doesn't he still have pretty high approval ratings?), are federal recalls constitutional?

30. If this can pick up steam, I'd LOVE to see the change in his rhetoric.
Probably the same guy who tried this in 2001, but he was having some decent response back then.

Maybe it won't go anywhere, but I so want to see the lowlife squirm; he's seemed to be uncomfortable in AZ since we defeated Hayworthless...
