Stop impeach talk, legislators urged

By Melissa Santos / Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Anti-war Democrats in Congress have this message for Washington state legislators pushing for President Bush's impeachment and reducing U.S. military involvement in Iraq: Don't waste your time.

Washington Democrats Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Jay Inslee requested last week that legislators drop bills calling for impeachment investigations of Bush and against the troop surge in Iraq.

They say such measures will increase political fighting at home while slowing the progress to get U.S. troops out of the fighting in Iraq.

Inslee and Murray are trying to tell state legislators that the efforts are a waste of time, said Inslee's spokeswoman, Christine Hanson.

"At the federal level, impeachment talks are more distracting than productive," added Murray spokesman Alex Glass.

State Sen. Eric Oemig, D-Kirkland, introduced the impeachment bill. Another bill that calls for the U.S. to refrain from increasing troop presence in Iraq is sponsored by Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle.

It seems unlikely either bill will come to a floor vote.

But the hearings won't be until Thursday. That's one day after the deadline to get bills out of committee, so the hearings will mostly serve as opportunities for Washington citizens to speak out, said Sen. Darlene Fairley, D-Lake Forest Park, who heads the Government Operations and Elections Committee that will hear the bills.

2. Please defacate on the Founding Fathers graves, please
That's what not allowing impeachment means.

It means "let's disrespect the law".

It means for Congress "don't you what you took an oath to uphold".

It means that the President is above the law over all other Americans.

It means that democracy and the Constitution are fickle and meaningless.

It means that the next Presidents can be above the law and can do whatever a King might want to do.

It means that laws passed by Congress and the Supreme Court are merely suggestions.

8. They're saying "shut up" to their constituents. Outrageous.

Telling their constituents to shut up about impeachment is reprehensible, but that is precisely what Sen. Murray and Rep. Inslee are doing by asking the State Legislature to cancel their hearing.

Their job is to represent, not dictate.

And now http://www.columbian.com/news/state/APStories/AP02272007news109568.cfm">Gregoire adds her voice to the "shut up about impeachment" drumbeat.

Our so-called "leaders" doth protest too much, methinks. Getting a little frightened that they might actually have to do something?

9. Or can send via congress.org
When you send a letter via http://congress.org">congress.org, you can opt to have it included in the "letters to leaders" section. The more letters on impeachment that appear there, the better.

Congress.org also allows you to create a "Soapbox Alert" to call on others to act. I created one to contact Murray and Inslee. Check it out at voiceoutrage.com.

10. This kind of political infighting is the only infighting that matters.
History will be very unkind to the Democrats if they roll over right now. They will forever be labeled the party with the best military record, and the least political spine.

11. Distracting from what! They're "discussions" with corporatist lobbyist bribers?
Someone needs to educate them about WHO the constitution says that they should be working for! Sounds like they are confused about that fact without these distractions!

13. Then impeach them as well
By letting Bush's many crimes go unpunished, they're violating the oath they took when sworn into office. Toss their worthless, Constitution-disrespecting asses out of office along with the Shrubmonkey.

I'm just so fucking sick of this bullshit.

19. in what fantasy world are you living?
Do you really think a majority of the House is going to impeach a Senator or another House member? Really, do you honestly think that there is the remotest chance of that happening?

15. It's like repairing the car the drunk crashed and killed with instead of stopping the drunk
Their solution to spend more time to "stop the war" THAT IS ILLEGAL AND IMPEACHABLE is like saying "let's fix Tony's car that killed a dozen people while Tony was drunk out of his mind" instead of just getting Tony the help he needs.

In this case of help, Bush can resign before he gets impeached and do what he does best: run an oil company to the ground with his old man's money.

20. Called Murray 1st thing Monday morning on this BS!
If anyone needs to be told STFU & STFD it's Murray, not those of us she's supposed to represent or our reps who are standing up. Read the riot act to her staffer, then sent her an email about it all, too. Murray seems to have been in DC too long. Along with alot of others, she's forgotten that she's there to serve we the people, not to hold herself up as our leader.

I've been swapping email with Sen. Eric Oemig since I learned our legislature was taking this up. I wrote and called my state Senator & told her to support him, too. He is doing the people's work down in Olympia and I'm proud of him.

21. So Sorry to Distract Form Your Non-Binding, Non-Potent, Non-Action
But unless someone's come up with a magic potion to circumvent "rule by signing statement," trying to be AntiWar AND AntiImpeach is a Big Sick Lie

Not only to the real Dem base, but to the victims of ongoing torture, our troops in the meat grinder, and the American People.

What better plan to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in '08?

Only Impeachment ... is a substantive act.

It IS our positive agenda.

It is our ONLY moral, patriotic option.
