Sampson: It's A Date!

Yesterday, the Senate Judiciary Committee extended an invitation for Alberto Gonzales' former chief of staff Kyle Sampson to testify. If he didn't want to come voluntarily, the committee said, he'd be subpoenaed.

Today, via a letter from his lawyer to the committee, he accepted -- no subpoena necessary.

"Mr. Sampson looks forward to answering the Committee's questions," the letter reads. "We trust that his decision to do so will satisfy the need of the Congress to obtain information from him concerning the requested resignations of the United States Attorneys."

The hearing will take place at 10 AM next Thursday.

Hopefully we'll have a John Dean moment*... probably not, but ya never know.

*For you youngn's John Dean's testimony to Congress really marked the beginning of the end for Nixon and his posse - it was staggering stuff. (Too bad Hunter S. Thompson left us - he'd have been highly amused by all this)

3. If this is for real, and he intends to tell the truth,

somebody ought to take him into protective custody from now until he testifies. Otherwise, he's likely to be suicided within the next week.

4. He's going to try to throw himself on the hand grenade.

I may be a bit of a pessimist about this, but I bet he ducks and dodges questions about previous conversations he had with Fredo and the White House figures about the problems they all saw with Lam's prosecution of Wade-MZM-Cumnmingham and Dusty Foggo.

When he's asked about his 5/11 e-mail, in which he suggested the White House move to replace Lam the day after the LA Times revealed serach warrants for Foggo and the investigation of Lewis, he may just say that was his idea, alone.

I hope I'm wrong, but I see Sampson playing the consummate fall-guy.

6. I'm not sure that's an accurate parallel

In fact, much of the really juicy bits of dirt on Cheney came out of Libby's "greymail" defense strategy. If Kyle Sampson has the same lawyers, he'll be a great witness!
