Let's talk about 'Monica' .......

Back in the Clinton years, the name Monica became the punch line of many jokes. Some of the jokes were pretty funny.

Except to people named Monica. I know very well of what I speak. Even overhearing others tell such jokes began very quickly to wear thin.

And now, it seems, it is starting all over again. There are damned few parallels between Ms. Goodling and Ms. Lewinski, but nonetheless the very name has brouhgt out the same tired old Monica jokesters again.

In my family we have a Monica, a Hilary and a Bill.

Back during the Monica I era, two friends of ours were on an airport bus at one of the DC-area airports. They were actually talking about us. The three names came up in their discussion. This was overheard by someone (with press creds?) who was sitting right behind them on the bus. They could not convince the clod that what he thought they were talking about wasn't what they were, in fact, talking about.

It isn't funny.

4. I realize how difficult it would be for anyone named Monica, but

there's really nothing anyone can do about it. The same thing happenswith anonewho shares a name with some notorious actions. All you can do is laugh it off, andsay "Right, that sure describes ME, huh?"
