The common thread that ties the Plame and Gonzales/prosecutor scandals is the attempt by the Bush administration to intimidate government employees, whether appointed or not into toeing the Bush line or facing not just being fired but being ridiculed, ostracized and shamed. My guess is that through a campaign of retribution against government employees who disagree with Bush Republican policy, the Bushies hope to cleanse the federal government of Democrats, liberal and moderate Republicans and, more generally, of any independent thinkers.
This becomes all the more evident when you consider the scandals about the Bush administration's editing the substance of reports such as those on the environment. In retrospect, it becomes clearer and clearer that Bush's appointment by the Supreme Court in 2000 was a coup. Bush has created a ubiquitous propaganda machine and attempted through various strategies to harness as much power as possible in the hands of his ultra-right wing, conservative clique. His power grab must be laid bare. The structure of conservative personnel that he has built into the government will have to be dismantled piece by piece.
Clinton was too good-natured and naive to see the danger these folks presented during the 1990s after Reagan and Bush. (For example, how long did Linda Tripp keep her job in the White House after Bush II left, and what was she doing while she was there?) Rove and Bush II have left no doubt as to what the Republican game plan is. They are placing as many ultraconservatives into strategic government roles as possible. We have to analyze their plan, identify the players in it, and defeat it. If we don't our entire way of life will be destroyed.
As long as we uphold our Constitution and our democratic institutions, our nation can pull together to weather any storm, defeat any enemy, face any crisis. But if we allow an extremist faction like Rove, Bush II, Limbaugh, and their fanatical supporters to take over, we will become divided and unable to succeed. The partisan rancor that we now see in Congress is just a hint of what might come if we don't change course as a nation and make sure that our government respects and includes people with different points of view.
