The Comedy Stylings of Bill Kristol
Edited on Sun May-13-07 08:11 PM by NanceGreggs
(PNAC Stand-Up at It’s Finest!)
By Nancy Greggs

I never miss an opportunity to catch PNACer Bill Kristol’s act, and his latest appearance on Fox News (May 13) didn’t disappoint.

Famous for his side-splitting one-liners, Kristol’s “gimmick” is his ability to unconvincingly play someone who knows what they’re talking about. And the well-coiffed, well-manicured satirist never lets on to the audience that this ill-informed, utterly clueless persona is anything but serious – therein lies his comedic genius.

While many stand-ups have delivered catchphrases that have become part of pop culture (e.g. I don’t get no respect, or, Take my wife – please!), Kristol’s punchlines will live in infamy for their ironic flair. Who will ever forget the pre-war classic, "Having defeated and then occupied Iraq, democratizing the country should not be too tall an order …”

It’s obvious that this guy’s wit and talent will be lauded for generations to come, and today’s performance on Fox only served to further make the case for his inclusion in the American Comedy Hall of Fame.

Smiling like a mindless idiot (a Kristol trademark), Billy’s delivery of a mix of old material and new gags was obviously honed at the local improv clubs he is known to frequent.

Always topical, Kristol’s target this morning was the eleven Republicans who read the riot act to Bush earlier this week about his policies in Iraq ruining their chances in the 2008 election.

“I think they can be beaten back with a strong campaign of explaining what's really happening on the ground in Iraq,” said a dead-panned Kristol. I must admit, as funny as the line was, I think he missed a great opportunity to tie-in some of the previous PNAC material, i.e. greeted as liberators with sweets and flowers, a square in downtown Baghdad named after George W. Bush, etc. to underscore the irony of what’s really happening on the ground. But far be it from me to tamper with this guy’s oh-so-perfect sense of timing.

As with all successful political humor, the funniest lines are often rooted in the truth, and Kristol has this approach down to a science: “(The Republicans) are being truly stupid to think they’ll get credit for deserting the war at this point.”

So true. The GOP is obviously ready to jump the BushCo ship come September, and their delusion that voters will somehow forget that this is, was, and always will be their war was underscored by Kristol’s innate ability to state the obvious as though it had just occurred to him.

“It’s a ridiculous political calculation, as well as a dishonorable one,” said Billy, without so much as a pause to let a by-now hysterical audience catch its breath. As always, Kristol was able to capture the hilarity of the GOP’s present position – the investigations, the subpoenas, the corruption being laid bare for all to see – with a simple turn-of-phrase that will no doubt be laughingly repeated at office water-coolers and DC cocktail parties for weeks to come.

But the topper of a truly great performance was Kristol’s nail-on-the-head punchline about the Republicans’ distancing themselves from the Iraq situation as “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory”. Honestly, I was laughing so hard, I thought I’d cry. Kristol’s straight-faced delivery of a line like that cemented his ever-growing reputation as one of the great comedic minds of our time.

All in all, it was an undeniable treat to be entertained yet again by Kristol – and kudos to Chris Wallace, who ably played the straight man to Billy’s inane ramblings without cracking so much as a smile.

Rumor has it that HBO is negotiating with Kristol’s people for an upcoming comedy special, to be aired live from Outside The Green Zone, the premiere improv venue in downtown Baghdad.

Watch for it in your local listings – it’s bound to be a hoot!

11. Don't forget your flak jackets!
It's dress code.

Yay! What a brilliant piece, Nancy. You've nailed a perspective. The train has left the station. And he doesn't even know it yet. I guess that's about the same as the emperor having lost his trousers.

26. And also, please don't forget to tip your waiters.
Leave a big enough tip and they might not try to blow you up. At the very least, they'll give you a running head start...

12. Halliburton has the catering contract ...
... so just be aware that the veal might be a bit pricey. I'd recommend the plain, unbuttered toast plate special (TWO whole slices) which is surprisingly satisfying at only $79.99.

5. Explaining what's really happening on the ground...
...should be made that much easier by the Iraqi government's recent ban on reporters and photographers at the sites of bombings.
"No, no. Don't photograph that crater in the ground where the market once was. Here's a puppy. See how good things in Iraq are? There are puppies."

16. Bill's monolog
I like when he quotes Paul Wolfowitz saying the WMD was the rational for going into Iraq because it's the only thing the Bush cabinet COULD ALL AGREE ON!

The architects of this war are funny enough to coax Andy Kaufmann and Lenny Bruce out of their graves just to enjoy a few minutes of this PNAC crew's new stand up. I used to think Robin Williams could riff, but Billy the Kay blows nanu-nanu's doors off! No wonder Kristol never opens for Robin's concerts any more!

23. The biggest rib in history
Watching Kristol is a little like watching Coulter. Every so often, there's one of those "S/he didn't really say that, did s/he?" moments (like when Poppy told the story about the gladiator and the lion).

k&r as always.

24. I hear ya!
Of course, I left out Kristol's trademark line - which he trotted out again today: "If we leave Iraq, the country will dissolve into chaos."

It cracks me up every time - but because the other PNACers have used that same old line, complete with rim-shot, it's sadly lost its original laugh-riot panache ...

34. Exactly - just cracks me up every time!!!
It just amazes me (and everyone, I'm sure) that Kristol, Perle, Wolfowitz, etc., have not gotten a SINGLE THING RIGHT about how this was all going to play out. And yet they're always on the talk shows, dispensing their "wisdom" about what should be done next, and their predictions of how things will go from there - and they get LISTENED TO!!!

and I'll bet he's just now startin' to notice a slight breeze and a bit of a generalized stinging sensation.
I'm talkin' sharp here.

That was just beautiful. I do appreciate finely crafted, edged weapons- be they steel or wit- and greatly respect those who know how to use them properly. :patriot::applause:

27. I beg to differ
at least on one point. Bill Kristol is not smiling like a mindless idiot. He is a mindless idiot. Nonetheless, "there you go again" (to quote another famous Republican entertainer)ridiculing hucksters for world domination. Of course the sniveling whiner Kristol isn't a real comedian, he just plays one on TV.

28. One has to wonder how Billy-boy will cover the upcoming
September brouhaha when Republicans, in a last ditch attempt to save their jobs, propose a "surrender" date. Oh . . . wait . . . they won't call it "surrender" date anymore. It'll be "Iraqi Liberation Day," not unlike our own Fourth of July.

The HILARITY of his routine of suggesting that commentators on Fox News and draft dodging Bush & deferment, "if you will", Cheney know more about warfare than these Generals coming out of the woodwork telling them they are as wrong as wrong can be must be recognized.

36. Did you know PNAC was nothing more than Bill Kristol and
a fax machine?

Radio Netherlands interviewed PNAC signer Francis Fukuyama and when pressed about how he could be so stupid as to sign the Invade Iraq Now letters...he said this...

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/4/17/124146/746

"Ah, I, aah, maybe that's right. Certainly by signing that letter...this was basically Bill Kristol and a fax machine. So every time he had an issue he sent around a letter and asked you to sign it and I certainly didn't think that I was signing onto the whole of his agenda." ...

"Well, again I think you are over emphasizing the importance of my signing a couple of letters, because I never really bought most of the agenda that project represented."

Yep, Billy pimped WW3 from his bloody fax machine.

He would have had a field day with this bunch...

Alas...

http://www.billhicks.com/

On Edit: Some Hicks quotes:

"Boy, I tell you, politics does make for strange bedfellows. Saddam Hussein says in this quote, 'We have nothing against America. We just want to see George Bush beheaded and his head kicked down the street like a soccer ball.' And I was thinking, that's so weird, 'cos... that's what I wanted to see. Wow, me and Hussein, we're like this (crosses fingers). Who woulda thunk it?"

"It's just a handful of people that run everything, and that's provable.... I have this feeling that whoever's elected president, like Clinton was, no matter what promises you make on the campaign trail - blah, blah, blah - when you win, you go into this smoky room with the twelve industrialist, capitalist scumfucks that got you in there, and this little screen comes down... and it's a shot of the Kennedy assassination from an angle you've never seen before, which looks suspiciously off the grassy knoll.... And then the screen comes up, the lights come on, and they say to the new president, 'Any questions?' ... : 'Just what my agenda is.'"

I have a few of his cds but had not heard this two disc'er. Has a lot of material I had heard but still a fresh tint to it and some i hadn't heard.

It is from a show he did at Oxford a few days after the 1992 elections.

slow download but worth it. Don't know when it will be scrubbed but seems to be still working.

You know what the Dixie Chix went through for talking bad about Bush in the UK? Wonder what they would have said about "Ding Dong" on disk 1. :7

39. All that is missing on that d-bag is a powdered wig
C&L has the video here, I love the screengrab-put a powdered wig on him and them do the quotes you mentioned with an air of aloofness and royal assholishness (as is Kristol's wont)
http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/05/13/kristol-republican-11-can-be-beaten-back/

The snatching defeat line was a howler. On the video check out Brit Hume about to go to sleep and Juan Williams incredulous looks while Kristol is speaking-it was either Williams trying to make sense of what to comment on or his burning eyes from sitting next to the stinch that is Bill Kristol.

BTW_ the brick wall Kristol will stand in front of at the "Outside the Greenzone" club? It will be built by contract through Halliburton and cost roughly $2.4 Million (that is just the intial estimate).
