Funny, the Falwell hatred has been expressed against DU'ers before
I remember not logging in for a couple days after Nov 2004 - back when I (and the rest of the LGBT world) was getting the blame for "costing us the election". While there was great support from many of our straight, not narrow allies here at DU - there was plenty of other emotions stirred up too.

If you can't identify with what the LGBT crowd felt then, then it's doubtful you'll understand why we feel as we do now over the death of someone who demonized us so, the one person responsible for making our lives, our loves a political issue to win votes and cash - regardless of the numbers of LGBT bashings and killings over the past years that keeps spiking higher - the man who claimed to speak for God in announcing his hatred for us.

If you don't relate, don't read the threads - use that hide thread option. Trust me, plenty of us here at DU (especially the LGBT crowd) find ourselves using it from time to time.

Personally, I wish the man had lived long enough to see full marriage equality come to the US - just like he suffered through his views on segregation being proven wrong. Now that he's gone - I personally hope that he finds that the God he worshiped is every bit as vindictive, angry and vengeful as Falwell tried to convince us all He was - there would be some great karma in that - and the alternative if God isn't that way at all, it'll just make a further mockery of everything Falwell stood for.

My name is Scott. And there is one less person in this world to try to make my family's life miserable for us so that he can remain wealthy and privileged. I'm glad he's gone, and I refuse to apologize for that.

3. Oh, when I heard the news, it was as though I picked the case
that had the one million dollars on Deal or No Deal.

I would be lying if I said I'm sorry that monster is gone.

Well said.

5. I see nothing wrong with your post
it is personal and real.

What I am saddened to see is when so called liberals behave like the Fred Phelps of this world.

Am I glad Falwell is dead? Yes, his brand of hate has reached it's Omega (for him at least). But do I think the celebration of his death to the extremes that I have seen on these boards is disturbing? I sure do.

6. Well, I for one apologize for offending your delicate sensibilities.
As the OP states - use your ignore button if you wish to keep your mind free of our ugliness. For my own part, however, I am positively gleeful that the hatemonger is gone. Worse than a hatemonger, he used hate to enrich himself. I sure hope there is an afterlife.

7. lol
it is not delicate sensibilities it is an awareness that when you celebrate his death to the level I have seen on these boards you are no different than him. A deathmonger who thinks they have the clarity to behave incredibly inconsistently.

It is about showing some class.

11. There is a huge difference - I never tried to tell him how to run his life
I never tried to stir up people against him to the point that he had to fear for his safety or that of his family. I didn't spend my life demonizing him so that I could run for office or have the ear of the President or bring in more cash for my programs.

That's the difference. I lived my life for myself and would have had an easier time of it if not for people like him. But I lived it without having do so at the expense of him or any other (the Liberal) He tried to live his life for his benefit and it always was at the expense of others (the Conservative)

Would you not be glad?

Would you?

WOULD YOU?!

8. "I'm glad he's gone, and I refuse to apologize for that."

I am in complete agreement with you there.

And I find it ironic (to say the least) that the very people who are saying 'have some compassion for him, for his family, blah blah blah' seem unable to recognize the enduring pain he caused the gay and lesbian community.

It seems a very selective sort of compassion they're demanding. Silence the victim, eulogize the oppressor. And no matter what, don't rock the boat.

:(

10. Wonderful post! Hateful, nasty men do not deserve our respect in life.
They certainly don't gain it when they die. If we forget all the horrible things Falwell did and respect his memory, how will we stop someone else from following in his footsteps. I want his sons to see the glee that his death caused those Falwell hated. I hope they know we rejoice in his passing. Maybe they will reconsider continuing his hate.

14. I'm totally with you
When I heard he dropped dead I was almost gloating to my roommates and spreading the word like it was announced Hitler just shot himself and the Allies found the body. Honestly knowing the kind of hate he stirs up against any groups he doesn't like, pagans like myself included on that list of his, he gets no sympathy or respect in death from me. He gave none in life to those he didn't like and stirred up violence against all the groups he railed against, I will NEVER forget how we were one of the groups he blamed for 9/11 that troll-spawned son of a bitch.

He had no respect for us or showed any dignity in life, he will receive none from me in death. It is one thing for an honorable foe to pass and raising a glass to their memory, its another when gutterswine like Falwell die. They deserve not but the dubious immortality of scorn, dishonor, and disgust.

I believe he was hateful, smug and hypocritical, and that he helped to bring about a huge amount of pain and suffering to mny people. If there is a hell- I suspect and hope he is in it. SINCERELY:)

20. I not sure I believe in God
But I sure hope that if She exists, She's a black Lesbian. Wouldn't Falwell be in for a surprise.

I'm straight, and what other consenting adults do with their genitals is none of my damned business. What people do to others' civil rights is definitely my damned business. Anyone who thinks that GLBT people haven't had their rights trampled on by Falwell and his compadres needs a reality check.

BTW, anyone who wants to dance on my grave is welcome. I only ask that you do it naked, and with great abandon. I'll be cheering you on from wherever I am...

I've told my story here on DU a number of times so I won't re-hash it yet again but, suffice it to say, Foulwell's teachings had a direct impact on my life as a young queer girl growing up in a hateful, homophobic Evangelical family. I urge straight DUers to please read a book called Prayer Warriors by Stuart Howell Miller to put a human face to the suffering caused by followers of the teachings of Foulwell and his ilk. I know there are dozens more stories like it on DU.

Put it bluntly I've had enough of "Christian" love, it ties us to fences and leaves us to die, puts our youth out in the street and leaves our elders to die alone and penniless. I've been a practicing Witch for over ten years now and just knowing that this evil bastard is reaping the rewards from his life work by the Furies makes me warm inside. I look forward to Jerry coming back as a poor, black transgendered lesbian so maybe he will learn something.

So add Jessica to the list of people who have your back. :hi:
