Howard Dean is right. We need to compete everywhere in America. We cannot afford to neglect rural America. 16% of the electorate in 2004 was rural. In 2004 we lost 59-40% among rural voters. Some candidates act as if rural America does not exist.

FLORENCE, S.C. - Democratic White House hopeful John Edwards planned a return to his rural roots on Wednesday, with campaign stops scheduled alongside actor Danny Glover in some of this early voting state's smaller communities.
"He thinks it's very important that when people come into South Carolina to campaign, they just shouldn't hit the major media markets," said John Moylan, a Columbia lawyer running Edwards' South Carolina campaign. "It has always been his intention _ his desire _ to have as many small, intimate meetings as possible."
Edwards and Glover were to speak to a county Democratic Party gathering at a restaurant in this city of about 31,000 people. They then planned to head to Bishopville, a town of less than 4,000.
In April, Edwards visited his small town birthplace of Seneca to announce a plan to help rural economies. It includes $1 billion in spending on initiatives like increased investment in rural small businesses, education, health care and resources to fight methamphetamine abuse. It also offers an overall commitment to make sure rural communities are first in line for health care, energy and anti-poverty resources.==
