The Reviews Are In: 'Score One For Hillary,' 'An Overwhelming Victory,' 'She Connected'
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 11:54 AM by William769
DES MOINES REGISTER'S YEPSEN - 'SCORE ONE FOR HILLARY,' 'CRISP, COGENT AND METHODICAL': "Score one for Hillary Clinton. The New York senator turned in the single most impressive performance during a debate among the Democratic presidential candidates Thursday night in Washington, D.C. Clinton was crisp, cogent and methodical in her answers. She understood better than any of the other candidates the need for terse answers when so many candidates are given so little time in which to answer questions. It’s more than just a debating skill. American presidents lead the nation through television appearances, and Clinton’s performance Thursday night suggests she can do that."

DONNA BRAZILE - HILLARY 'WAS A STANDOUT,' 'SHE CONNECTED': "Brazile said 'Clinton was a standout. She clearly understood that these issues deserve urgent attention, and she connected on that,' Brazile said of the New York senator."

PBS' TAVIS SMILEY - MULTI-RACIAL FOCUS GROUP THOUGHT 'HILLARY CLINTON HAD CLEARLY WON THE DEBATE'

NEW YORK POST - 'AN OVERWHELMING VICTORY FOR CLINTON': "In the nation's capital, 33 undecided voters who identified themselves as people of color and who supported John Kerry in 2004 scored last night's face-off an overwhelming victory for Clinton. Twenty-seven participants gave the former first lady the nod..."

Good thing I'm leaving for the weekend now. This ought to be fun! I guess I'll just have to wait till Monday to find out.

2. Hillary got a standing ovation for one of her answers! She clearly connects with voters
Some of the candidates wandered all over the place in their answers. When asked about AIDS and African-American women, a couple of them leaped straight over to Africa itself.

Tavis Smiley (who's usually too abrasive for my taste) kept everyone to their time and allowed each candidate their allotted time to respond. He did very well.

And so did Senator Clinton.

3. We'll now have to watch the focus group, I guess, even with that shit Luntz running it.
I would have thought, given the many issues raised, and responses provided, that there would have been, dare I say, a bit more diversity in that opinion.

Twenty seven out of thirty three? What, were they all truly undecided ahead of time? The methodology for choosing the focus group has to be discussed. It would be interesting to find those people who participated and ask them a few questions, too.

I'm undecided, and I agree that her performance was very strong--I'm just rather surprised that the focus group was so decisive about it.

programmed to respond to sound bites -- they can't seem to deal with actual arguments and facts.

By the criteria of fact and actual, real solutions to problems, Kucinich and Gravel "WON" the debate.

By the criteria of the ability to give the appearance of sincerely parroting memorized sound bites, yes, Hillary was the one.

Indeed, we have a new Slick Willy -- It's Slick Hil...

And his second, abolishing the income tax, is goofy at best.

41. Not really
He's got a lot more going for him than that. In that stupid "debate" forum they each only get a chance to zing a
couple of soundbites, nothing more.

There's more of his "platform" here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3346882&mesg_id=3346882

I'd be interesting in the results if each candidate was allowed to have 15 or 20 minutes to articulate their entire program.

If Hillary's website is any indication -- sound bites is all she's got...

46. So Gravel's message didn't get through because of sound bite limitations
Edited on Fri Jun-29-07 03:27 PM by AndreaCG
But Hillary is wrong because her sound bites were effective.

Furthermore, Gravel did not advocate a "progressive tax" system last night. He advocated abolishing the income tax and replacing it with a national sales tax. That is widely accepted to be a regressive tax, hitting poor and working class disproportionately.

And there's nothing wrong with requiring initial voter registration. Voters have to be US citizens and 18 years of age. It's the requirements that are imposed on voters AFTER they've registered that are the problem like needing to show a photo ID. In NY, our signatures are checked against the one on the original voter registration. That should be sufficient.

Also Gravel referred to his drug program a couple of times when it was totally irrelevant to the question. That's an indication to me of having little to say about anything but your pet projects.

BTW Slick Willy was a RW talking point and an unfair one. Do you really want to emulate the loony right wingers by calling Hillary Slick Hil? It's a cheap shot and offensive.

It decreases the likelihood that I will be voting Democratic for president in 2008. I may have to find a Green Party petitioner this coming year.

So that would indicate that she CAN'T win the general, and the knuckldragers CAN stop it...

14. Why do you say that Hillary is a corporate shill? What are examples of this?
It seems to me that she has done a really sound job as the junior senator from NY. She has honed in on the 9/11 failures (as the pollution); in addition she was the first voice I heard calling for a Palestinian state, way back before the idea was popular. She is heads up on health care change. I am a yellow dog democrat it is true, but these unproven attacks on one of our premier candidates and the attendant attitudes that her nomination is a reason not to vote for the dem candidate is beyond the pale.

50. I feel your pain
I went to High School in VA the first year they "integrated" the High School. Their idea of "integration" was to scoop up the 4 best athletes from the Black High School and drop them among the 2100 white kids.

That move DID win us the state basketball championship but as I had just come from a public H.S. in Hawai'i Virginia's feeble attempt at racial fairness was beyond laughable.

Now we live in an R+1 district so it will be a challenge after spending all those years in Barbara Lee's district!
