AP: Ron Paul Has More Cash on Hand Than McCain
This was buried in the article about the fundraising by Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, but I thought it merited its own thread.

Among Republicans filing Sunday, Ron Paul, the Texas congressman running a long-shot campaign, reported raising nearly $2.4 million from April through June and ended the quarter with a similar amount in the bank.

The total is a remarkable showing for Paul, putting him ahead of Arizona Sen. John McCain in cash on hand. Paul still barely registers in public opinion polls and raised far less than McCain or the other leading Republicans. But his libertarian views and opposition to the war in Iraq have lit a fire among nontraditional contributors, particularly on the Internet.

Paul has relied on his debate appearances and on an online network to spread his message. He also spent $120,000 on printing and mailing fundraising letters, his single biggest expense. Overall, he has raised $3 million for the year and spent $646,000.

Maybe he should have accepted Kerry's VP offer instead of inserting his own picture next to the definition of selling out one's soul (in vain).

1. I have to say, I've seen a ton of Ron Paul lawn ornaments outside
of businesses lately.... I haven't seen any signs for any other repugs.

6. Here in NH...
...driving around yesterday I noticed several Ron Paul signs, but I don't recall seeing signs for anyone else, Democrat or Republican.

3. I wonder if Paul will run as an independent
When he doesn't get the nod. He has a lot of netroots momentum- I think he could be the republican's version of Nader in 2008.

As for McCain, this has gotta hurt.

4. If you look at net numbers...
Paul has about as much cash on hand as Romney, and excluding Romney and Giuliani about as much cash as the rest of the candidates put together.

McCain has more debt than cash, Romney has $9M in debt to go with his $12M in cash, most of it money he loaned the campaign himself.

5. Note The Dismissive Use of "Nontraditional Voters"
I'm not going to vote for Paul anytime soon, but I think anyone with the ability to raise this much interest from the debates deserves better treatment from the media. However, because the media have a pre-existing narrative to fall into, they are not going to shift coverage.

My gut also tells me that the media don't like anyone who would rise out of the debates unless it somehow reflected the power of the media. And Colbert always told me to trust my gut.

8. I Can't Understand Why The Iraq War's Poster Boy is Not More Popular
Oh, that's right. The real enemy is the people that crossed the border to take the jobs no one else wants, working hours no one else will endure for pay no one else will accept as minimimally decent.

Damn you, McCain! You are destroying America, you pinko! We need more "real" "tough" "men" like Romney and Thompson.

Did I mention the GOP is fielding a bunch of second-rate yahoos? One macaca joke and we're all running around henny-penny like a bad Rumsfeld dream (you know the one, where everyone is crying about a bunch of looters and chaos and disbanded armies and "boohoo we don't have enough ground forces to stabilize the region and establish basic living conditions before they turn against us for staying in their homeland to maintain the stable flow of oil" - you remember how that all turned out for the better).

These guys are in trouble far beyond McCain's personal Hindenburg of a campaign.
