Biden's on Letterman tonite
I know everyone here is running to their televisions right now so they won't miss it.

But, it wouldn't hurt to check out another candidate.

1. Actually, I'll definitely make sure to check that out.
I mean, I ain't plannin' on voting for the dude, but I always like to hear candidates' ideas. Hell, for pure entertainment value, it's even fun to listening to the most deeply weird of the conservatives. You ever heard a Brownback speech? Terrifying, man. But you can't look away. It's like a car wreck.

3. I hope people will tune in to Biden more now. Then it won't be so
surprising when he finishes in the top 3 in Iowa next January.

5. I'm going to have to check out that book. Right now I'm happily
lost in Larry mcMurtry's TEXASVILLE, but will be in the mood for something political real soon.

Could very well be Biden's.

A lot of people have written this man off. I think that's a mistake.

6. So far it's not real political
except for what he said to a reporter on 9/11 - wow.
That will be another thread for another day.

Mostly so far about his childhood, his family & their hardships, and being a stutterer...
bu-bu-bu-Biden was his nickname. He definitely overcame that!

7. I am only learning today of the difficulty he had with
stuttering, and have to say that a strong heart and mind must have driven him to a life of public service.

His public comments and comments on the Congressional record on John Bolton were some of the most inspired words I'd ever heard from anyone -- ever -- on the Foreign Relations Commitee.

In the end, Bolton didn't know what hit him. Dubya had to opt for the interim appointment, which was more or less a disaster. Biden was not only passionate and eloquent on that one, he was absolutely right from the very beginning.

10. I'll venture this guess, Andy -- that if Joe Biden were at your
house tonight, he'd offer to do the cat box for you.

That's a projection, yes. But Biden's never been lazy with chores.

Mitt Romney would strap your cat up to the top of his damn SUV and blast across the country into the wind and the rain.

The scenario is fictional but the tone of the contrast is more the point.

Go back and look at Biden's voting record over a long period of time and see if you don't think he' a pretty sound public servant.

11. I Looked At His Record, & I See the Rave Act Stuffed Down Our Throats in the Dead of Night
The Rave Act would never have made it through Congress on its own merits.
They had tried before, and it had been shot down amid a massive campaign of letters, petitions, and phone calls.
Democracy was working, but Biden couldn't abide that, so he added Rave Act to the Amber Bill in the conference commitee.
Making a change like that in a conference committee is an abuse of the democratic process, especially in this case.
The Amber Bill was sailing through Congress — everybody supported it.
The Rave Act was receiving a lot more opposition than support from the public, and was not advancing through Congress.
So he bolted the Rave Act onto the Amber Bill in the conference committee, so that the only way anyone could vote against it was to vote against the entire bill.

I would like our next President to have more respect for the democratic process than that.

13. I'm not fond of the piggy-backing of component legislation either, but
Democrats and Republicans have done it for years.

Madison and Jefferson gave us a good document but not a perfect document.

I appreciate the frustration on that one.

But the sum of his voting record is solidly liberal and suggests (for example) that his judicial appointments would veer toward the trajectory of that voting record.

And the man's no slouch on foreign policy.

15. He Also Pissed Away the Support of A Lot of Young People
Whenever I say that, the retort is "Young people don't vote".

Did you ever wonder why not?

We got a lot of young people organized to fight the Rave Act and we were winning.
We were able to demonstrate democracy actually working the way it is supposed to.
That is a big deal, and these people would have remained politically active and on our side.
Then Biden stabbed us in the back.
We lost those people that day, and we will never get them back.
Most of them became totally disillusioned with politics.

16. In truth, I think it's his voice versus the Iraq War that is going to
prevail -- and the men and women fighting there and serving in our armed forces are in fact young people.

Recent polls back this up. Young voters are not drawn to the Republican party or its platform and say they favor Democrats by a wide margin.

One of our Democrats is going to be the nominee and then the next president. I have a feeling that U.S. voters under 30 are going to support the blue ticket in very large numbers in 2008.

19. Let's See If I Can Respond to This One Before the Mods Delete It
As soon as somebody screams "DRUGZ", we are supposed to let them shred the Constitution, and
it's OK, because anybody who objects to the shredding of the Constitution is obviously on drugs.

Added to the delivery, and you are doing a nice job of making my point about alienating voters.
