R. I. P. ~ Ron Paul
Today Ron Paul went from a 18-1 underdog to merely 8-1. Obviously, there are still some Republicans who have not drunk the Kool-Aid.

This can only mean one thing. All the Republicans who HAVE drunk the Kool-Aid, (including the dutiful MSM), will now have to take Pon Paul seriously as a candidate.

Which, being Republicans, means they will have to destroy him -- personally, professionally, politically.

So watch for vicious attacks on Ron Paul, coming soon to a major media outlet near you.

1. What happened today to make this change, and where are you getting
those odds from?

2. 8:1?
Still not quite a solid factor. The usual sleaze will not pull away his supporters, and in fact may even embolden them and give him lift. It is far more likely a candidate with the numbers that has been playing it a bit on the safe side might begin to co-opt a bit of his views.

Watch for the 'Return of the living-dead McCain'

Keep an eye on Thompson as well.

3. Of course
That said I kind of hope they slam him and his views. It will only serve to reduce aggregate repug-nik participation and interest level.

4. I think the only reason his popularity is going up
Is the other candidates have used him as a punching bag. Sense no other candidate appears to be very popular... the people assume the punching bag might be right. However besides his Iraq stance there isn't that much appealing about him.

5. Why bother?
Even Repugnicans won't vote for an overt racist like Paul. Repugs like their racism hidden under the thinnest sheen of plausible deniability. not out in the open. I'll give him credit, though: you've got to have some serious brass balls to say shit like "the Criminals who terrorize our cities - in riots and on every non-riot day - are not exclusively young black males, but they largely are."

6. Still waiting for the "real" Rebub candidate
When they come in, I expect the media to focus on them just like they are doing with HRC. There is huge pressure to "finish off" the selection process as soon as possible so the rebranding can begin.

One issue does not a candidate make.

11. I saw Ron Paul Revolution signs all over Memphis yesterday...
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 03:47 PM by emdee
I couldn't believe it - everywhere I went there they were. It says Ron Paul Revolution - now see that in the word 'Revolution' love is spelled backwards? The backwards Love was in red with a capital backwards L.

12. Hes' the only one against the war, could have alot to do with it.
I'm no fan of libertarianism, but I think alot of conservatives are a bit embarrassed to be called republicans and are now heading into the libertarian camp. It allows them to be against the war, yet still be against taxes.

16. Against everything that, one hope, we Democrats hold dear
mostly the benefits that a government can bring to the lives of citizens. He wants a small government no programs, no help, nothing.

You are sick? you are poor? you are old? tough.

Is this really the kind of politician being admired on DU? Only because of his stand on the war?

I wonder what his stand would have been in 1941, and about Kosovo. And the first Gulf War.

17. For me,
It's not that I admire him. In fact, under normal conditions I would find him and his policies revolting. But today's Republicans are so bad, so evil, that Ron Paul, however awful he is, would be a slight step up for the Republicans.

18. Bob Novakula sez Chuck Hagel has been watching Paul's mini-surge
with interest and is still considering joining the GOP race--pretty safe bet he won't win the nom if he runs, but it would surely be Ron Paul's worst nightmare come true.

20. Ron Paul is a Libertarian. Libertarians are about the only ones left that care about Constitution
I thought the Democrats would protect America from her enemies, by protecting and defending the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

I was wrong!
