Wingnuts don't give a crap about Iraq, the country
Profound comment seen on Daily Kos tonight:

http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2007/8/19/214443/388/8#c8

Know what the word 'IRAQ' means. (31+ / 0-)

"Vietnam" means more than just a war, it also means the upheaval and social changes that took place at home.

In the same way, "Iraq" means more than just what's going on in a battlefield or a geographic place. It's also an "issue" here at home.

The chickenhawks want to win Iraq, not in the sense of some strategic victory overseas, but in the sense of winning the domestic issue and defeating domestic political enemies. A reverse "Vietnam", where conservatives win, hippies lose, Nixon remains presidnet and the cold war goes on forever.

And THAT'S why the chickhawk never feels like going overseas. That's not where the real fight is. Iraq the country could sink into the earth for all they care. What really counts is winning Iraq the issue. That's why you can't convince them to sign up, or even to coherently discuss strategy for fighting. They don't care. They really see there service as electing more republicans and using the issue to do so.

and a followup:

Well, it comes out occassionally (16+ / 0-)

that what must be avoided in Iraq is another Vietnam....by which they COULD NOT MEAN THE STRATEGIC MILITARY LOSS by taking troops out of VN. How do I know that? Because nobody gives a shit about losing Vietnam the country. What they care about is losing Vietnam the issue domestically.

Bush is turned into hero of Vietnam the issue because he was going to turn around the domestic politics. Kerry became the goat of Vietnam the issue, because he came out against the war and was a damn hippie.

Mitt Romney thinks his kids are winning Iraq...not the war, the issue...and in doing so, really doing what's important.

It would all be merely pathetic if not for the dead people and trillions wasted.

1. It's a team sport, and the only reason they back their team is because they are so rabid.
And the reason their team is rabid is because they're focused on that OIL.

Troops, shmoops. They want that black gold. The blood of our young they see as fair exchange.

2. Oh my gosh...check out the videos:
Here: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/8/19/214443/388

Reasons for chicken hawks not serving, in their own words:

1) "Expecting war supporters to actually fight goes against the Constitution".
2) "Too busy "fighting the battle of ideas" here at home."
3) "I support the Yankees, doesn’t mean I wear their uniform."
4) Government "wants me to make money so I can pay for it." This clown went on to say that if more troops were needed in Iraq, he would be happy to enlist...but Dubya hasn't said more are necessary.

All said by young Bushies with a straight face.

4. Exactly. They view the war as a political abstraction
not as something that is killing insane amounts of people and wasting money needlessly.

Just watch how quickly some of them go from "Saddam was a tyrant, blah blah, WMD, blah blah, Iraqi's are better off thanks to us!" to "Just nuke the country and start over!" when they get fed up with the war effort.

5. As obvious as it seems
I wasn't looking at it that way... I spent entirely too much time and effort discussing these sorts of arguments at face value.

6. This great comment was made on YouTube:

You know what the worst part is? Twenty or thirty years from now, a guy like this is going to be running for president against an Iraq War veteran, and he's going to accuse his opponent of hating America.

8. Bush needs to continue being a "war president"
Edited on Mon Aug-20-07 11:07 AM by butlerd
It's pretty hard to be a "war president" without a "war". After Afghanistan was "finished" in a fairly short amount of time, Bush et. al had to do SOMETHING else to keep the "war" mentality going in order to keep his critics muzzled, to help Republicans (and later himself) electorally and his friends and cronies financially, and for him and Cheney to further consolidate their power and get their agenda enacted. Likewise, the GOP sees our continued presence in Iraq and perhaps more "war" elsewhere as their only "salvation" for the same aforementioned reasons. Sick. Sick.
