AP - Edwards buys 2 minute ad to rebut Bush speech on Iraq

WASHINGTON - In the clamor of Democrats assailing President Bush on Iraq, presidential candidate John Edwards has found a way to be heard after Bush addresses the nation Thursday night: He's buying time for a rebuttal.

Edwards has bought two minutes of air time on MSNBC, scheduled to air after Bush's 15-minute televised speech from the White House at 9 p.m. EDT.

Bush is expected to announce plans to reduce the American troop presence in Iraq by up to 30,000 by next summer, but say that he will condition those and further cuts on continued progress.

"Unfortunately, the president is pressing on with the only strategy he's ever had — more time, more troops, and more war," Edwards says in the ad, according to excerpts provided by his campaign.

1. MSNBC?
And exactly how many people will that venue reach? He'd do just as well yelling from the roof of a tall building. LOL

3. Bush's speech is at 9:00 -
KO is having a pre show before the speech and probably commentary afterward. I think this venue will reach more people than your LOL comment would suggest.

5. Ratings
I'm just saying MSNBC does not do well in the ratings. It may reach the die-hard Dems who want to see him, but in terms of hard numbers, MSNBC is not the place you want to go if you're trying to reach people.

Of course, his speech will likely get picked up and shown in clips on other outlets. That may be his plan.

24. Die-Hard Dems...
With the primaries approach, what other voters would Edwards be interested in reaching? The Moral Majority? This is a very (very) smart move on his part. My guess is that the core viewership for "Countdown" corresponds quite nicely with the core voters in the Democratic Primary. Dollar-for-dollar, I don't think Edwards could have done better.

heard loud and clear. And he's hot. Don't forget that - Keith is SMOKIN HOT!

4. I would think commercial time in the proximity of or during a bush
propaganda stunt is of little or no value. Maybe Edwards got a great deal! At least YouTube and others should pick it up. But if this clown bush is getting free time any voice of opposition should get an equal amount of free time.

14. Oh my, you're right ... JE's a "sponsor"....
they have to be nice to him....lol.

Also, lately, KO and Matthews really are sharing the same "get out now" rant with JE. Chris even had Kos on the other night and agreed with him that "nobody died" from the MoveOn ad.

18. Sooo true!
You know - Money talks!

Tweety is confusing me here, one minute he is on a great rant, the next he goes back to Tweety. It must suck to have multiple personalities! I feel that way about Dead Intern Joe too - hmmm, haven't missed him a bit!

21. I like Morning Joe, then again, I was an Imus fan :)
I just heard that JE will appear on CNN's Larry King after the MSnbc ad ?

I think they'll be running discussions all day on Daily Kos, so I'll keep peeking over there. Seems the Dems (DLC?) are mad at JE for doing the ad....stay tuned

16. Campaign email:
Tonight, after President Bush makes yet another argument for continuing the war in Iraq, John Edwards will speak directly to the American people in a nationwide address on MSNBC.

Our campaign has bought airtime on MSNBC immediately following the President's address at 9 p.m., and John Edwards will challenge the President's remarks with a strong call to the nation to end the war now.

Please watch in that timeframe—and forward this e-mail to your friends, asking them to watch as well. Each of us has a responsibility to make sure that President Bush and Congress understand that the time for excuses has run out. John Edwards will deliver a strong message tonight on our behalf. It's time to end this war and bring our troops home.

Buying this kind of airtime is expensive. But we believe that President Bush's address must be countered with a strong voice in opposition to the failed policies that have kept our troops in harm's way for far too long. Tonight, John Edwards will continue to lead, and make the case to the nation that we cannot wait for an election to change course in Iraq—we as citizens must make Washington understand that the time to end this war is now.

Don't miss John's address tonight on MSNBC, immediately following the President.

President Bush will be on every network for free tonight. Our campaign will have to pay for the time on MSNBC so that John Edwards can challenge the President's failed policies. Please consider making a contribution to the campaign—to help us meet the costs of paying for tonight's address—and to help John's campaign continue to grow.

Thanks for all you do,
