Biden: Pollution More Deadly Than Terrorists
Interview with Charlie Rose

<snip>

Rose: Sen. Biden, forgetting about the upcoming Iowa caucus for just a moment, which would you honestly say is more likely to contribute to the death of your average American: a terrorist strike or high-fructose corn syrup and air that has too much coal in it?

Biden: Air that has too much coal in it. Corn syrup next, and then a terrorist attack. But that does not in any way diminish the fact that a terrorist attack is real. It's not an existential threat to bring down the country, but does have the capacity still it can kill thousands of people. But hundreds of thousands of people die and their lives are shortened because of coal plants, coal-fired plants, and because of corn syrup.

1. Ah, yes.
Let's all remember the Great Boston Corn Syrup Flood of 1919.

2. Good, he is putting 'terrorist attachs" in perspective. Many are afraid to do that. Another Dem
did that this week also. Was it Richardson??

8. People need to read 1984 again
or watch the movie. Terrorism has been used as a fear tactic for political gain for six years. Kerry tried to put it into perspective in 2004 and was railroaded for it. Hopefully people have become wiser and realize they have been HAD. "We are safer, but we're not safe enough."

4. I don't know about that.
I'd put HFCS at the top of the list as the prime cause of the obesity epidemic and the resultant diabetes epidemic - think that tops coal plant lung ailments.

But he has the right idea.

6. yeah, basically it's this: terrorism is an overblown problem
compared to other problems we are faced with.
I would go as far as this: terrorism was less of a problem 7 years ago. Bush has made it more of a problem and WE'VE spent tremendous resources in attempt to beat this problem back, while these other problems are killing us now and may even be a threat to human existence on this planet.

There is no place for reason when the objective is FEAR 24 hours a day!!!

5. Common Sense? Well, how about that. Biden certainly seems to
consistently demonstrates the most common sense of the nominees. I still don't quite know why he gets bashed so badly here at DU.

7. Biden speaks "common sense" on a regular basis
but the media doesn't care much for "common sense" and ignore a candidate unless he/she makes a mistake, raises a lot of $$$, or gets an expensive haircut. Too many people come to the process with preconceived notions of any particular candidate, notions that were often created by the MSM.

12. It is a serious issue that we are failing to address!
I'm thinking about starting an action group - MARB, Mothers Against Rampant Beheadings!

Think of the Children!!!

13. No. Just pointing out why people aren't going to fear corn syrup
the way they fear terrorists. Fear of corn syrup isn't going to control our behavior, and cause us to allow our civil liberties to erode, and lead us into needless war. Now, trans fats...those are some real scary-ass mofo's.

20. People are so easily manipulated
by the media and politicians.

When Bush is up against the wall, he points to a reporter and brings up "your children". The one reporter didn't have children, however.

16. Very true... but not very 'sexy'.
The MSM and the GOP love terrorism because it gets the blood flowing in most Americans. People just want to ignore dirty air. Why don't we have the liberal equivalent of Rupert Murdoch to get OUR message out there?

18. Yeah, how sad
They'll cover gruesome beheadings, but not flag-draped coffins! And of course lets just ignore the Iraqi women and children being killed and maimed as a result of this war.
