VA GOP hates Democracy. Gilmore Senate nomination assured

For the 2008 election, the Virginia GOP has chosen to nominate with a convention the person who will represent the GOP in the general election to replace Retiring Senator John Warner. This format was chosen over a general primary, which has been the mode of selecting primary candidates in at least the past 12 years. According to the GOP they are doing this to save money. Personally, that's bullshit. Basically, the GOP is attempting to subvert the popular will of Virginians.

This is a fundamentally an undemocratic form of nomination. Now rather than everyday Virginians having a say in the election, only party regulars will be able to nominate their Senator.

Interestingly, this move is likely to guarantee that John Gilmore will be nominated for Senator rather than Tom Davis.

Idiots. They must be incredibly desperate. They know they don't have a chance in hell of defeating Warner, and they don't want Davis to run, because they know if he did, there's a good chance they'd lose his seat. But Gilmore?? It's gonna be a blowout.

2. They want to protect Davis's House seat
Fairfax County has been moving left for the last 10 years, and as soon as that seat opens up it is a possible, or even likely Democratic pickup.

3. When Gilmore finds out there is no national car-tax he'll be out of ideas
Gilmore has the worst credential in the world--Bush's anti-terrorism guy before 9/11.

4. Actually, conventions and caucuses are a GOOD idea in the south
because Repukes vote in the Democratic primaries in DROVES to pick the weakest possible candidates. True story. They don't care about their own primary, because the fix is ALWAYS in and they all march in lockstep anyway. I don't know about Virginia, but the Democratic parties in Georgia and Mississippi would be much better off with "undemocratic" conventions and cacuses.

5. Gilmore was the most unpopular governor in the last 50 years
what makes the republicans think the people would want him back as a senator. And I wish Davis would run, because if he did it is a fact that there would be another democratic seat.

7. I don't know anyone who doesn't see Warner as having fixed Gilmore's screw ups
actually Allen and Gilmore's

and I do mean everyone. Even Republicans I know cringe and try to let the subject pass when Gilmore's name comes up.

Gilmore looks to be a lock for their nomination. And Mark in turn has the Senate seat under wraps too--not to count chickens but come on.
