Buoyed Edwards Back on the Trail
Buoyed Edwards Back on the Trail
By Christine Hauser--New York Times
Wednesday, October 31, 2007

----
PORTSMOUTH, N.H., Oct. 31 – Fresh from the Democratic debate last night in Philadelphia, John Edwards returns to New Hampshire today for campaign events and to receive an endorsement from a politically powerful union that promised to support him in this crucial early primary state.

Mr. Edwards' campaign appeared buoyed by the debate, in which he repeatedly challenged the credentials and credibility of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Within 20 minutes after the debate ended, his staff sent out an email highlighting the reactions to Mr. Edwards performance from 16 Internet and television commentators.

Many of the remarks by Mr. Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, in the debate were familiar to reporters who have covered his recent speeches on the campaign trail. He has consistently derided the system in Washington, D.C. as “broken”; spoken of a rich-poor imbalance in the public school system; criticized Mrs. Clinton for her vote on an amendment against Iran, and spoken of trade agreements that did not work, bringing up the entry of Chinese toys into the American market.

Mr. Edwards will appear today at a rally in Concord, where one of the New Hampshire locals of the Service Employees International Union, Local 1984, will present its endorsement. Local 1984’s State Employees Association, which has 9,000 members, is now working out the details of the support.

The endorsement has strategic impact in primary states, because the New Hampshire local can now coordinate efforts with SEIU locals from other states, including Iowa. While the SEIU national board, which represents nearly 1.9 million workers, voted last month to leave it up to state councils to decide whom to back, Mr. Edwards has now garnered endorsements from enough of the state councils to represent 1.03 million SEIU workers overall, according to his campaign staff.

Local 1984 said in a statement that it had interviewed and compared the records of the candidates when making their decision. It said Mr. Edwards was chosen because of his support for expanding health care, commitment to strengthening unions, and his pledge to protect public sector pensions.

After the rally, Mr. Edwards is scheduled to hold town hall meetings in Peterborough and Manchester today. In between, he will go trick-or-treating with his children, Jack and Emma Claire.

1. Yep ...
.. if Al Gore on Thursday's (11/8) Tonight Show hasn't confirmed his candidacy (or otherwise) , then I think all true Progressives/anti-Corporatists should indeed get behind John Edwards. They'll indeed try to pull a "Howard Dean" on him ( or Gore ) as should be expected. But maybe Democrats will see through the "Money Buys Everything, and Big Media All the Rest" patina of the "supposed" inevitable front-runner ( who - seriosusly - I've yet to meet someone who actually SUPPORTS !! )

Please ... DON'T let these MEDIA minions decide who the Democratic nominee is going to be. It is NOT inevitable ( despite what they tell you ). Those with the power ( and $$ ) are trying to discourage us EARLY ON (hell, a YEAR out !) to accept the "inevitable" and hence, disempower us. Activism .. participation, be DAMNED ! We've already decided for YOU ! Our Media, our Polls, our Hillary ...

Don't even BOTHER !!

Sorry ... I intend to BOTHER !! I want a Democrat ... a Progressive as our next President. It's really quite simple.

3. and Gore's appearance
on "30 Rocks' the same night? I read that the whole cast on that show will wear "Gore '08" t-shirts. That would be a clear signal that he will run.
